The principal research area of the Gartland Bone Group (GBG) is in understanding the basic cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for musculoskeletal disease, with an emphasis on the role of extracellular ATP and P2 receptors. As a result of earlier seminal work by the group leader, Dr Alison Gartland, that demonstrated the functional expression and consequence of P2X7 receptors in osteobla

sts and osteoclasts, these receptors are now receiving considerable attention as potential mediators of bone remodelling and targets for drug therapy.

Legs still slightly sore after training hike on Friday- but that is nothing to the pain people with arthritis have to put up with. Like Jean, a 93 year old lady we met in Edale on Friday- she'd had 2 hip replacements 20 years ago and her ankles were all twisted- yet she was still up and walking, albeit with 2 sticks. She was in a lot of pain though 'Do you think I will drop dead soon with the pain?' she asked ' I hope not!' I replied. 'Tell me, you medical scientist type people, how do you stop the pain from worn out bones and cartilage? All my doctor gives me is paracetamol.' 'I don't know!' I pathetically reply! She said we had made her day by talking with her and thanked us. I would like to thank her as it was a most appropriate end to our practice walk- and a much needed reality check, inspiration and added motivation!!!

We are taking part in The Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk 2012 on 1st September to help raise awareness and funds for Arthritis Research UK. Arthritis Research UK work hard to take the pain away for sufferers of all forms of arthritis and help people to remain active. They do this by funding high class research - including several projects that are ongoing in our lab. Please give generously!!
