Big congratulations to SoMaS PhD students Georgios Moulantzikos and Vinh Vu for their success in SIAM's "Financial Mathematics and Engineering Student Programming Competition".

Giorgios and Vihn formed one of the four SoMaS teams who took part in this competition (hats off to Dr. Dimitrios Roxanas!) and they succeeded in becoming on of the eight finalists! Wish them luck in the final, which is tomorrow afternoon!

The main focus of quantitative and data science roles in the finance industry is to implement research in a real-world context. The ability to apply such research to real-world problems requires modern computational and data science skill sets. SIAM’s programing challenges provide the opportun...

The generalized Pareto distribution is widely used in engineering, environmental science and finance to model low probability events.

In a brand new paper, that is partially based on his thesis, former SoMaS MSc student James Sharpe together with Dr. Miguel Juarez studied the Pareto and related distributions using Bayesian and frequentist approaches.

(2021). Estimation of the Pareto and related distributions – A reference-intrinsic approach. Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods. Ahead of Print.
