Introducing another of our wonderful speaker line up for our conference: Dr Samuel Birks!

Dr Samuel Birks is an emergency medicine registrar and a medical educator at the University of Sheffield Medical School. Sam’s workshop will explore how to bridge anatomical knowledge with clinical practice in this interactive workshop. Participants will analyse clinical cases, brainstorm relevant questions, and discuss the clinical implications of anatomical structures. As we work through several clinical cases which include radiological images used to aid diagnosis, and the procedures performed as treatments, attendees will gain insights into integrating further clinical context into their anatomy teaching and learning.

Sam’s clinical career spans 8 years and after demonstrating his commitment to medical education through teaching alongside his clinical training, Sam now holds a position as a university teacher in medical education, focussing on anatomy and digital learning.

His dedication and enthusiasm for teaching anatomy in particular has led him to the position of interim Academic Lead for Anatomy. Sam has a passion for developing engaging visual resources for students including visually-appealing posters, handbooks and bespoke anatomical illustrations. Additionally, his recent adjustments of the medical school’s approach to teaching anatomy has led to a notable increase in clinical relevance with exposure to clinical procedures, radiological imaging and case studies.

Professor Julian Burton is another of our wonderful conference speakers who will be delivering his lecture ‘Dicing with Death: 5500 years of human dissection and the autopsy’.

Julian is Professor of Medical Education and Head of the Section of Medical Education at the University of Sheffield School of Medicine and Population Health. He is also a retired coronial autopsy pathologist, and has written several books and national guidelines on autopsy practice. This lecture considers how the nature of and reasons for human dissection and autopsies have evolved alongside societal norms and our changing understanding of the world. Spanning 5500 years, it explores how these practices have developed from ancient magico-religious beginnings to modern scientific advances.

Introducing our first key speaker for our 6th Annual Conference on 16th March 2024…

Sam Webster will kindly be delivering his talk ‘Being Useful and YouTube’.

“My biology teacher at school pointed me at an Anatomical Sciences BSc course, which led me into proper science, a PhD in molecular, cell and developmental biology, and a career in cartilage biology research cut short by the offer of an anatomy teaching job. The circle completed, I understood the importance of teachers in our lives, and used the job as an excuse to go back to studying human anatomy as much as I wanted to and getting paid to do it. I’m still studying, and either you find more anatomy the more that you study, or I’m forgetting it almost as fast as I study it.”
