Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Sheffield

The Department of Metallurgy was one of the founding colleges of the University of Sheffield. It later merged with Glass, Ceramics and Polymers to become the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. And is now one of the largest centres in the UK, home to several research centres, providing a focus for research innovation and collaboration.


| Teaching |

Teaching is research-led and is t

herefore at the forefront of current knowledge making the Department a stimulating environment in which to study. We are continually developing lecture courses to offer students the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in world-class experimental facilities. Our excellence in teaching has been recognised nationally. We have been awarded 22 out of a possible 24 in the recent HEFCE teaching quality assessment.


| Research |

The Departments research spans the breadth of industrially relevant materials including metals, polymers, composites, ceramics, biomaterials, glasses and coatings. In more recent years, focus has extended to cover topics such as materials chemistry, materials physics and applications of materials in medicine. With a strong history of excellence in materials research, many major research breakthroughs have been made in Sheffield Materials Research Centres including the discovery of polymer electrolytes and the role of carbide precipitation in the strengthening of ferrites.

Providing outstanding world-class facilities, the department is home to excellent characterisation and x-ray facilities as well as laboratories for cell and tissue culture, flow assisted fluorescence cell sorting, conformal microscopy and liquid chromatography.
