Centre for Early Modern Studies, University of Sheffield - SCEMS With over 30 staff and fellows, Sheffield Centre for Early Modern Studies covers the 'long' 16th, 17th, & 18th centuries.

A research centre based at the University of Sheffield, SCEMS brings together academics from a variety of disciplines who all share an interest in the 'early modern' era (ca. 1450-1850). Our fellows include historians, scholars of literature and language, musicians and social scientists. SCEMS coordinates a programme of interdisciplinary events, many of which are free and open to the general publi

c. SCEMS also provides assistance for those designing new research projects with an early modern focus, and helps to promote events and initiatives of early modern interest taking place on and off campus. In 2015, and in collaboration with the postgraduate-run Early Modern Discussion Group, SCEMS is launching the Early Modern Forum, a lunchtime seminar and discussion space, Thursdays in termtime. What were they thinking? The challenges of academic book reviews | Thursday, 19 October, 1.05-1.50pm | HRI

This session is intended as a development activity for postgraduates and early career researchers. Combining insight into published book reviews and anecdotes about the writing process with pragmatic advice, this session will examine the role of book reviews as a scholarly resource and publication opportunity. The session will be led by Dr Iona Hine, Dr Rachel Stenner, and Dr Sanna Raninen.
