Happy Friday again.! I thought I’d show some more of the bankers lamps angles! It deserves it as this one took a while to come together.

The shade is made up of 44 layers, each one drawn individually, cut and painstakingly hand finished. Every layer is separated by four CNC machined spacers. In total there’s over 400 parts in this piece, which were all designed and assembled individually by myself starting with a sketch and following through to CAD drawings.

The 20th layer is copper, some may already know this but it’s a small personal detail tied to my birthday which is on the 20th. This isn’t something that stands out to anyone straight away, but it matters to me as I like adding little details like this.

The copper braided cabling is routed internally through carbon tubes within the lamp to keep the form clean. The exposed part of the cable then flows down the spine of the lamp through some more specially machined parts. The switch is integrated into the brake caliper itself, utilising an existing threaded hole.
On the base there are four rocking feet to help everything kept within the structure rather than added on, another detail I like to include in my pieces.

When it comes to CAD I’m still a bit old school in that I use 2D CAD, learning 3D CAD is on the list but it does make things more interesting when working this way and make the process more satisfying when it comes out right! It does mean there’s a lot of time and attention in something like this. It’s a slower way of working, but it’s currently the only way I know how to get it right.

This one’s now settled into its new home, which makes the hours worth it.

I’d be happy to share some more details of any part of it if anyone wants to see it?

Happy Friday everyone! I thought I should share some more photos of this piece as I’ve only shared a couple of details and it’s one of my favourites so far. The starting point was a Brembo brake caliper and carbon fibre wishbone from an F1 car. These parts were designed for a completely different job, to slow a car down from break neck speed. They’ve now slowed right down!

I’ve always loved old banker’s lamps and have a few. It’s the proportions that i like the most and the way they sit on a surface or a desk and illuminate a space. The light is controlled, mostly down and directional, and never too much. I love the mood they create.

This is my interpretation of that idea, just pushed through a more mechanical ‘Bear’ form language. The overall form is influenced by airflow around wheels, how it wraps and moves with purpose. The brass layers in the base are inspired by the forms of early F1 car design which was simple simple, functional, but considered. These layers are connected to the spine of the lamp with the help of the carbon wishbone parts just like the wheels are connected to a real F1 car.

This one’s now living happily in its new home with a client, which for me is always the best part of the process. Knowing that my pieces are going to a good home with someone who appreciates care and attention to detail that I try to put into my work.
This piece will always have a special place in my heart, I love its presence and proportion.
I’m interested in what people notice first, is it the engineering side or the light itself?

It’s been a while — but I’m back., not that I wasn't here but you know what I mean.
Life has been busy, very busy. Lots of projects and commissions in the background, which I’m excited about grateful for, but sharing what I've been up to has kinda fell by the wayside.
I took a bit of time out in the mountains for Easter, and finally got back on my snowboard after about four years! Also spent some time teaching the baby Bear one to ski for the first time, which was pretty special, also got him on his little snow board for a bit too!
But it did get me thinking about something I really struggle with and I know I’m not alone. When you’re deep in the work, documenting and sharing it feels like a whole separate job. I struggle to know what to say, I'm fine talking to people in the real world but I'm not a social media person. I never have been. It's also finding the time to say it and actually remembering to post, I'm a massive procrastinator when it comes to this posting thing. Its one of those things that’s easy to keep pushing down the priority list, especially when it's just you doing it all.
Bear Industries has had a really good few months projects wise and I want to get better at bringing people along for it. I keep saying it but I must try harder. More updates on projects and commissions coming soon, I promise, hopefully! And if people want to see it?
Anyone else in the creative or maker world find this a challenge? Would love to know how you handle it.

This has to be one of the most unusual—but thought-provoking—inspirations I’ve ever been commissioned to work with. A client came to me with a wild brief: create a pendant light inspired by the “Einstein” tile, that mind-bending 13-sided polygon mathematicians discovered in 2023.
For context: this shape does something supposedly impossible. It tessellates aperiodically—meaning it covers a surface perfectly without ever repeating the same pattern. Unlike regular tiles that create predictable repetition (think: bathroom floor), this is order and chaos coexisting. Pure mathematical poetry.
I spent weeks obsessing over how to translate this into a functional light fixture. Each layer is precisely cut, stacked, and offset to create this hypnotic structure that echoes the tile’s complex geometry. The way light filters through the gaps changes depending on where you’re standing—just like how the tile itself reveals different patterns at different scales. I also love the subtle asymmetry of this piece.
The best designs blur the line between art and mathematics. This one definitely keeps you staring.

This 1930’s Art Deco-inspired porch light has quickly become one of my favourites.
As someone who’s always loved the Art Deco aesthetic, this commission was a real joy—to create a piece for a modern renovation of a 1930’s house that honours the original era while bringing fresh life to the space.
Brushed solid brass frames hand-cut glass panels that cast a warm, golden glow, all supported by hexagonal shaped custom machined billets that are like the honeycomb in a beehive. The fixings and hardware are left visible—honest construction that nods to the industrial roots of that era. The geometric cage base pulls straight from 1930’s skyscraper design, when buildings and objects shared the same bold, streamlined language.
It’s a piece that bridges past and present, fitting seamlessly into a home that deserves authentic period details with modern durability.
Although this piece is pretty much made from scratch the globe on the bottom is actually salvaged from an old street lamp, its like the back end of the bee sticking out of the honeycomb.
Really enjoyed working on this one, it was so so satisfying to see one one come to life!

This commission found its home in a very special porch in Oxfordshire – a space that called for something with presence but also warmth.
The brief centered on Bees and Art Deco geometry: strong verticals, layered panels, that characteristic interplay of light and shadow. I worked through several iterations to get the proportions right for the space and the sightlines.
It’s a bit of a monster to, at nearly 60cm tall and constructed entirely from solid brass including all the fixings.
I managed to shoot this one before delivery to document the piece properly as there’s a lot to it. Now it’s installed and doing what it was designed to do – anchoring a transitional space with considered light.
The best projects come from clients who know what they want and trust the process to get there. I feel very lucky to have clients who trust and believe in me and allow me to create for them.

🏆 IT’S TROPHY HUNTING SEASON - PART 2 🏆
More details about these special trophies I created for Masters of Motoring…
Each trophy features 2 copper tags - one showcasing the Masters of Motoring show logo, and the other engraved with the specific category and show date. These little touches really make each award personal to its winner.
As I mentioned before, the 8th layer of the shade is a different colour on each trophy to represent the individual award category - it’s one of my favorite design elements that makes each one truly unique.
The combination of the turbo craftsmanship, the Castle Combe circuit-inspired shade, those meaningful copper tags, and the layered steel construction… each element tells part of the story of what makes Masters of Motoring special.

From Formula 1 to Home Office Desk

When precision engineering meets classic design. This isn't just any desk lamp – it's a Brembo brake caliper that once gripped the wheels of an F1 car, now reimagined as an art deco Bankers Lamp.

Every curve tells a story of speed, every detail crafted from brass, aluminum, and copper and hand finished. From the racetrack to the workspace, some things are just too beautiful to retire. The components of the lamp are inspired by the forms of F1 cars past and present.

This has to be one of my favourites so far and shot by the incredibly talented .. and what better to shoot it in than a giant safe.! More shots of this to come as PJ has really brought it to life.!
