🎉 It's time to celebrate! We're shining a spotlight on the incredible winners of 100 Big Ideas.

This year, our students proved just how much good a big idea can do. From sensors that let rivers "speak" for themselves and warn us when they need our help, to a smarter mobility cane bringing self-driving car technology to the visually impaired, to a wardrobe library helping students walk into job interviews with their heads held high - every single idea started with someone simply refusing to accept that a problem was unsolvable.

Our winners tackled loneliness, food waste, safety, sustainability, mental health, maternal care, financial hardship, and so much more, right across campus and right around the world. Some were sparked by a personal story - a grandfather who can't hear his smoke alarm, a friend hurt walking home in the dark. Others grew out of pure curiosity about how the world could work better. All of them are proof that you don't need a perfect plan to start making a difference - just an idea worth chasing.

We are so proud of every student who took part. Read our article celebrating the winners and discover the stories behind their ideas 👇

📣Following our recent ESBF Engineering and Science enterprise competition, we are delighted to share the 3 winners

1st Place – Allotrope
Allotrope develops an AI-driven platform that predicts the most stable crystal structures of drug candidates, reducing costly experimental screening and late-stage failures in pharmaceutical development. They aim to provide pharmaceutical companies with fast, reliable crystal packing predictions integrated into their existing workflows. By combining AI with advanced computational chemistry and proprietary data integrations, Allotrope enables faster, more efficient drug development.

2nd Place - Celeron Automotive
Celeron Automotive’s aim is to design and manufacture a road legal, formula style, track car. It will provide not only the ultimate driving experience for customers; with their car’s performance rivalling some of the world’s fastest track cars but will be stylistically driven.
The car itself will be a light weight, closed-cockpit, single seater, combustion engined car that will use both cutting edge, and well-established Formula One technologies evidenced with their active ride suspension system and ground effect aerodynamic package.

3rd Place - Intelligent Species-Specific Acoustic Repulsion System (ISARS)
ISARS develops a smart household device that listens for mosquitoes, identifies the species using a deep learning classifier, and deploys a targeted acoustic signal to repel them. Unlike chemical sprays or static ultrasonic devices, their reinforcement learning agent continuously adapts its repulsion frequency making mosquito habituation impossible. The device runs entirely on a low-cost microcontroller, with no internet connection or mains power required.

We were really encouraged with the growth in applications & seeing more Engineering and Science students engaging with enterprise, it was a very tough choice by our judges and was great to see so many amazing innovations coming from our students!
📢To all those who entered, Champion of Champions is now open. You should have an email in your inbox with all the details, if you are interested in entering, please get in touch with the Student Enterprise team

The University of Southampton won the Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Award at the Graduate Futures Awards 2026! 🏆

Our Student Enterprise and Social Impact team took home the top prize for the Student Enterprise Pathways Framework, beating out over 200 submissions across the UK and Ireland. Supported by Enterprise Educators UK, this national win (the GRAFTAs) recognises our mission to make enterprise support accessible, relevant, and developmental for every student—no matter their background or starting point.

🌟The judges called it: “A very clear and effective initiative that broadens accessibility to enterprise learning and has a compelling and well-evidenced impact that demonstrates the success of the approach.”📈

💬“We are incredibly proud to have won this award. What makes this especially meaningful is that it recognises an approach built around widening access to enterprise and helping students enter in different ways. Too often, enterprise can feel like it is only for those who already see themselves as founders or have highly developed ideas. The Pathways Framework is about opening that door wider, helping students find the right route in, build confidence, and progress from wherever they are starting. To have that recognised nationally, and by a category supported by Enterprise Educators UK, is a fantastic validation of the work the team has put in.” says Tom Simmonds, Head of Student Enterprise, Social Impact and Events.A massive thank you to our incredible team, partners, mentors, and brilliant students who make this possible! 🚀
