✨ We are very excited to announce that the Physics and Astronomy department will be hosting an online Physics and Astronomy summer school for UK A-level students of Afro-Caribbean heritage on 20th July. ✨

🚩This will be our second annual summer school for students of African-Caribbean heritage with the first such event last year receiving extremely positive feedback from attendees.

🚩The day will feature a presentation by Benyam Dejen, Director of Outreach at the Blackett Lab Family. The Blackett Lab Family is a social enterprise made up of people from a variety of professions and specialisms who share a passion for physics and positive representations of the Black community.

We are excited to announce that Southampton physicists are developing new tools to improve environmental sustainability when producing photonics circuits at a high volume scale.

Physics and Astronomy research at Southampton have been awarded more than £700,000 Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funding to develop new instruments that can improve environmental sustainability when testing photonic integrated circuits at full wafer scale.

Massive galaxies could actually generate a sudden increase in star formation just before they shut down completely, according to new research by a team of astronomers including researchers from Physics and Astronomy at Southampton.

An exciting study led by Southampton recently discovered behaviours of some of the most extreme objects in the universe. A team of researchers from eleven countries, studied the eruption of the X-ray binary known as Swift J1858. They found hot, warm and cold winds from a neutron star whilst consuming matter from a nearby star.

Head of Hybrid Photonics Professor Pavlos Lagoudakis and research fellow Dr Sigurdsson demonstrated Thomas Young's famous 220 year old double-slit experiment in the reciprocal space. During the one experiment, an optical analogy of two fundamental experiments of quantum mechanics were observed.

Dr Sigurdsson mentioned: "photonic spin orbit coupling is a relatively young field of research and full of opportunities to control the properties of light, like we show in our study."
