Ex Connaught Commander

This weekend, Burma Company were on Longmoor
Training area for Training Weekend 5. This was a
culmination of the skills and drills they’ve learnt over
the past year, whilst being tested in various command
appointments.

They conducted Vehicle Checkpoints (VCPs),
successfully stopping and searching vehicles and
de-escalating tensions with OpFor whilst navigating the
Laws Of Armed Conflict (LOAC).

Further to this, they conducted Standing and Fighting
Patrols as a platoon and Night Recces, all
accumulating in a final attack on the Sunday Morning.

REME Engagement visit

Last weekend, a team of our Officer Cadets visited MOD Lyneham, the home of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, for an engagement weekend aimed at potential officers. There, they were exposed to various competition based stands based on the different roles available in the REME, from an aircraft technician stand, to a practical vehicle recovery demonstration.

After competing against teams from other UOTCs around the country, they came second overall, and also won 101 FS Battalion’s prize for best team on their stand! After a social in the officers mess on the Saturday night, there was also the opportunity to visit the REME museum in the morning to round off the weekend.

Army Athletics Cross Country

This Wednesday, officer cadets from the unit ran the 7th league fixture at Warminster, which is just one of the many paid army sport opportunities available to our officer cadets!

The Warminster course this week featured a thigh burning 235m of elevation, but the team pushed through despite the conditions.

Exercise Snow Stripes 2025

This past week, 36 SUOTC Officer Cadets and Staff took to the slopes of Valloire in the French Alps.

Throughout the week both Staff and Officer Cadets enjoyed great weather whilst working towards achieving their SF1 and SF2 qualifications.

With 5 groups total, 3 SF1 groups, with a range of past skiing experience and ability, learnt the basics of Alpine Skiing. From starting the week learning how to put on skis, to skiing down a variety of slopes and even off piste by the end of the week. This made them competent skiers and prepared them for taking the next step into SF2. Further to this, the remaining 2 groups took on SF2, they took on challenges such as touring and carving, polishing their abilities as established skiers and enabling them to look to complete their SF3 qualifications.

This was a great opportunity for those involved which promoted unit cohesion and provided everyone with a platform to push themselves out of their comfort zones.

P Company 2024

This Wednesday, two of our very own Officer Cadets were amongst the 15 individuals to earn the coveted maroon beret on the All Arms Pre Parachute Selection course at ITC Catterick: better known as P Company.

Their journey started in April this year, with Exercise Maroon Student, a series of 3 introduction, preparation and test weekends for Officer Cadets interested in the Parachute Regiment, with those that passed being loaded onto a series of 6 screening and preparation weekends run by the regiment for applicants from all arms across the Army Reserves.

After passing all 6 screening weekends, Officer Cadets Lu and Hardiman were loaded onto P Company itself, and tackled the infamous 8 tests under the watchful eye of the P Company directing staff. Requirements included those such as passing the 20 mile endurance march in under 4 hours and 30 minutes, the Trainasium aerial assault course, and the dreaded log and stretcher races.

This entire pipeline is just one of the many incredible opportunities available to our Officer Cadets. Interested in the UOTC? Search UOTC today.

Burma Company Training Weekend 1

At the beginning of the month, Burma Company Officer Cadets deployed to Hankley Common Training Area for their first training weekend of the year.

The JUOs led lessons on target indication, judging distance and fire control orders. This enabled the company to go on and conduct successful section attacks over the course of the weekend. Being able to refine their individual drills was a good introduction for the Officer Cadets to move onto platoon actions later in the year.

Remembrance Sunday 2024

SUOTC Staff and OCdts proudly represented the unit and took part in the Remembrance Ceremony in Southampton this Sunday.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”

Lest we forget.

Looking back at the past training year, Burma Company welcomed A Company OCdts onto their Weekend 7 last year. Where OCdts from both companies combined for and exercise on Barossa Training Area, defending a FOB and completed several Platoon Attacks.

This was a great opportunity for Burma Company OCdts to practice their leadership under difficult circumstances, whilst the A Company were pushed out of their comfort zones and perfected their skills and drills in novel situations.

Exercise Parachuting Scholar 10

This August, 12 SUOTC OCdts spent a week at Netheravon on a Static Line Parachuting Foundation Course.

Instructed by our very own OCdt Bayada, the OCdts started the week in ground school, learning how to pack their own parachutes and the necessary drills before taking to the sunny skies above Salisbury.

This was a great experience for all OCdts involved, and with this being the first time for many parachuting, they took the opportunity to push themselves out of their comfort zones all whilst getting paid!

Recruitment 2024!

It has been a pleasure meeting so many of you over the past 3 weeks at Freshers Fairs, Open Evenings and especially those who attended Exercise Dynamic Recruit this weekend.

At our Freshers Fairs and Open Evenings POCdts were given a greater understanding and a taste of what Southampton UOTC and the British Army has to offer them in order to make their University experiences like no other.

This led onto Exercise Dynamic Recruit, where POCdts were pushed out of their comfort zones through a variety of team building and bonding activities across the recruitment weekend such as a high wires course, bouldering races and command tasks.

We look forward to welcoming you all into the unit on your first training night this Tuesday!

Trailwalker 2024

A couple of weeks ago, SUOTC had OCdts in three teams that took part in Trailwalker 2024, challenging themselves and raising money for a great cause in the Ghurka Welfare Trust.

The annual event is the ultimate team endurance event. The challenge is to walk, jog or run 100km across the South Downs Way in under 30 hours in a team of four, with a support crew to help us get to the finish line.

Starting at Queen Elizabeth Country Park early on Saturday morning, the Trailwalker route took our OCdts along the South Downs Way to the finish line at Brighton Racecourse.

A massive congratulations to all those who took part and completed the event, both as competitors and as support crew.
