OCdt Highlight - JUO McKenna

JUO McKenna recently took on Army Flying Grading (AFG) with the Army Air Corps — a four-week course designed to test not only whether you’re suited to the AAC, but whether the AAC is the right fit for you.

The course covered everything from aircraft checklists and safety procedures to weather reports, daily briefings, emergency procedures and pre-flight checks.

Then came the flying. Starting from zero, each lesson built on the last until Adam was flying the full circuit with no instructor input.

Every flight was assessed on capacity and flying skills, with candidates needing an overall score of 3 to pass. With 3 representing the course average and 5 being instructor level, there was plenty to aim for.

He finished the course as Top Cadet, earning the course trophy for his performance.

Alongside the flying, he also experienced life on an Army base, integrated into the mess and got involved with the traditions that come with it. Four weeks of intense training, a whole new set of skills and a trophy to take home.

Not a bad way to spend your time at university.

One of our JUOs recently was recently selected to represent the British army at the ITF world cup in Canada against 27 different countries and over 1000 competitors. She smashed it out of the park, bringing home a gold medal 1st Dan black belt patterns, and we are all incredibly proud to welcome her home as world champion (…again).
Furthermore, following this success she was selected for the interservices taekwondo championships, against the Navy and RAF, of which she brought home two golds in sparring and team patterns and a silver in individual patterns.
We’ve loved supporting her through this process and can’t wait to see what she achieves next!

Regimental Dinner 2026

This year, SUOTC had the privilege of hosting our Regimental Dinner at HMS Nelson.
Set among historic surroundings, the evening was an opportunity to reflect on everything achieved over the past year, celebrate success, and strengthen the bonds that make our unit what it is.

The dinner also gave us the chance to recognise those leaving SUOTC and thank them for the contribution they’ve made during their time with us. Their impact will be felt long after they move on to their next challenge.

A huge thank you to the staff at HMS Nelson for their excellent hospitality and a fantastic meal. We’re incredibly grateful to have returned for a third consecutive year.

Here’s to another successful year and the memories made along the way. 🥂

Ex Mechanical Endeavour

This weekend, four Southampton OCdts headed to MOD Lyneham to take on Ex Mechanical Endeavour alongside other UOTCs.

From command tasks to engineering challenges and assault courses, they got hands-on with the skills that keep the Army moving — all while learning directly from REME soldiers and officers.

A great opportunity to test themselves, build new skills, and get a closer look at life in the Corps.

This past week, two OCdts from Alamein and Burma Companies successfully completed the All Arms Physical Training Instructor (AAPTI) course in Aldershot, showcasing their growing expertise in physical training and leadership. The course involved intensive training on fitness instruction, leadership, and physical conditioning, challenging the OCdts to refine their skills in motivating and managing others during physical training sessions.
The experience has significantly prepared them for the next stage of their training, Annual Deployment Exercise (ADX).
