🌊 Founded a global conservation organisation at just 21.

University of Southampton alumna Francesca Trotman is the Founder and Managing Director of Love The Oceans, a non-profit conservation organisation working with communities in Mozambique to protect marine ecosystems and drive ocean conservation.

In the latest episode of the Meliora Podcast from the University of Southampton’s Sustainability and Resilience Institute, Francesca talks to Professor Simon Kemp about her journey, the work of Love The Oceans and the importance of community-led conservation.

We were saddened to learn of the death of Clair du Boulay OBE, one of the first students to join Southampton Medical School and a much-loved Southampton alumna.

A pioneer in medical education, Clair dedicated her career to helping doctors learn, reflect and grow, influencing medical training across the UK and earning an OBE for services to medical education.

Remembered as a passionate advocate, inspiring teacher and fearless thinker, she leaves a remarkable legacy. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, colleagues and fellow alumni.

This morning, we hosted our first-ever women’s philanthropy event at Mansion House in the City of London, bringing together alumnae, friends and supporters of the University.

Hosted by alumna Dame Sue Langley, Lady Mayor of the City of London, the breakfast explored the role women can play in creating opportunities for others, with a focus on social mobility and medical innovation.

Professor Deborah Gill, Vice-President (Education & Student Experience), shared how the University is supporting students through initiatives such as the Ignite programme, which helps students from underrepresented backgrounds build confidence, networks and access opportunities.

We also heard from Dr Jemma Longley, Chief Investigator of the VIOLET study, which is working towards developing an early-detection tool for ovarian cancer. Her research highlighted the potential for new approaches to improve the early detection of cancer.

Research like Jemma’s is exactly what we want to accelerate through our ambition to build the Institute for Medical Innovation (IMI) – bringing experts from different disciplines together to speed up research and turn discoveries into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease.

It was a brilliant morning of conversation, connection and ideas, and we’re excited to build on this first gathering.

Meet Trung Phan (MSc Water Resources Management 2020), Southampton alumnus and this year's British Council Study UK Viet Nam finalist for the Science and Sustainability category.

Trung is doing incredible work to support climate change as well as supporting the new generation of those who are equally passionate. We are so proud of Trung and his continued success since the awards.
