Meet our Alumni!🎓

Southampton alumna, Bethany, is turning personal tragedy into a mission to raise awareness and save lives.

During a trip to Laos in November 2024, Bethany and her friend were caught in a mass methanol poisoning incident. Tragically, her best friend Simone and five others lost their lives after consuming contaminated spirits.

In response, Bethany has launched a national petition to add methanol poisoning education to the UK school curriculum. Her mission is to ensure young people are aware of the hidden dangers of counterfeit alcohol abroad – knowledge that could save lives.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) warns travellers of the risk of methanol poisoning from counterfeit or illicit alcohol in several countries, including Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Fiji, and Turkey – highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness.

If you'd like to find out more and sign the petition, click the link below. Alternatively, you can follow Simone methanol awareness and on Instagram for updates.

🎬 Our Tech Made It to Hollywood!

In Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, humanity faces off with a rogue AI in a race to save the world. The secret weapon? A futuristic 5D memory crystal inspired by real-world tech developed at the University of Southampton.

Created by researchers at our Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), this pioneering optical storage technology proves that our innovations don’t just push scientific boundaries, they help shape the future of storytelling.

From the lab to the big screen, it’s a thrilling reminder that what we do here really can change the world - on and off screen.

Meet Jess! 💃🧪🎓

Jess volunteered throughout her undergraduate studies as Social Sec for Southampton Dance and is now helping Southampton students to make the most of their time at university by sharing her insights on graduate life as a Graduate Ambassador (all while Humphrey the cat looks on 🐈).

“I really enjoy being a part of this community of Graduate Ambassadors and the opportunities we get to be a part of! Not only do I get to meet other alumni doing really interesting things, but the activities and events that I get to partake in have also really personally benefitted me, pushing me out of my comfort zone but so often for a really good scheme.

“As a volunteer, I’ve been part of panel discussions, podcasts, presentations, school visits and also given back to the schemes that helped me during my degree.”

Thank you for sharing your story and insights with your University of Southampton community, Jess!

Meet Nikhil! 🎓

"I had spent a lot of time at the university, completing my degree, PhD and PGCE, as well as spending some time as a Research Fellow. In that time, I was given a lot of opportunities and was able to work with a lot of different teams, which undoubtedly prepared me for the career that I have had so far.

“I enjoy coming back to the university to volunteer in different events, to give something back to the place that helped me so much.”

Nikhil has been bringing together our diverse alumni community through his interactive science café on campus last year for local alumni and, more recently, sharing his experiences of life after completing a PhD with current post doctorate students, helping them to navigate the many corporate, academic, and third sector career options on offer to them.

Thank you for volunteering your time and expertise to give back to your University of Southampton community, Nikhil!

Meet Claudy! 🫶

Based in Chengdu, Claudy is one of our longest-serving volunteers and has proudly led the China Southwest Southampton Alumni branch for the past eight years. From Sichuan to Tibet, he’s been welcoming alumni from across the region.

One of Claudy’s standout moments? Supporting the University’s Open Day in Chengdu! He shared his Southampton journey on a panel and brought together a team of alumni volunteers to chat with prospective students about life at Southampton followed by a celebratory dinner honouring key volunteers.

“Volunteering lets me put my communication skills into action. It’s all about connecting with people — and I’m proud to help build a network where our alumni can support each other and grow together.”

Thank you for volunteering your time and sharing your story to give back to your University of Southampton community, Claudy!

🫶 Meet our alumni volunteers 🎓

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible University of Southampton alumni who continue to support their university community by sharing their career top tips and experiences to show what life can look like after graduation, and how to get there.

Thank you to our alumni community for inspiring and reassuring students whose shoes you were once in!

Alumni panellists, mentors, community fundraisers, speakers, and Graduate Ambassadors are all helping our communities to achieve great things, whether that’s by preparing students for their dream jobs, bringing together our diverse alumni community, or helping students to understand what life can look like after graduation.

We were delighted to welcome back the Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) Class of 1995 as they marked their 30th anniversary with a special reunion. The group enjoyed a tour of the campus with two of our current students, taking time to see how things have changed and to revisit some of the spaces that shaped their student years.

One of the highlights was a visit to the simulation lab in the Nightingale Building where they recreated their original class photo format! It was a day full of laughter, shared memories, and renewed connections.
