Archaeology and Anthropology form great degrees for developing these skills that the BBC has highlighted as those wanted by employers:

1. knowing how to organise, prioritise & plan (think about what we all do during fieldwork!)
2. problem-solving & decision-making (well, many of the degrees, but easiest to document from fieldwork again!)
3. communication skills (all our students have to give presentations during their degrees, and many complete assignments designed to communicate to specific audiences. Some will do placements with employers and develop these further)
4. collaboration & teamwork (well, fieldwork... need we say more? But obviously we also have module with group assignments and group projects)
5. creative thinking (that is very much what archaeology & anthropology are all about. And some modules ask students to design things or develop public engagement ideas doing exactly this)
6. evaluating data (archaeology & anthropology always have to work with incomplete data - so our students develop the skills to weigh up data and assess realiability/consistency etc.

Experts have identified six key skills that will count as much as qualifications in getting and keeping a job in the coming decade.

A new archaeological discovery is offering rare insights into early hominin behaviour and the emergence of controlled fire use.
Armando Falcucci, Lecturer in Palaeolithic Archaeology at the University of Southampton , noted that the evidence shines a spotlight on a pivotal period of human evolution and may transform our understanding of the Lower Palaeolithic in the Levant.

Archaeologists in Israel have discovered a cave used by pre-Neanderthal human-like creatures who lived as long as 400,000 years ago, making it one of only a handful of sites from the little-known period accessible to scientists.
