Our Black History Month talk is tomorrow (14 October) and will be delivered by Vitali Byl, our Global Fellow. The talk is titled ‘A Forgotten Hinterland of the Black Atlantic: Africans in Early Modern East-Central Europe.’

Call for applications: Cameron Fellowship!

The Department of Modern History at the University of St Andrews invites applications for the Cameron Fellowship in Early Modern History, to be taken up during either semester of the academic year 2027-2028.

The Fellowship is open to any academic in a permanent university post with research interests in any aspect of early modern history to c.1780. The financial aspect of the fellowship is a subsidy (up to £4000) towards the cost of travel to St Andrews and accommodation during their stay. The successful applicant is normally someone enjoying research leave from their own institution. The Fellowship carries with it no teaching duties; instead, the Fellow is expected to take part in the normal seminar life of the community of early modern historians during their stay in St Andrews. Fortnightly seminars, held on a Thursday evening, run from September to December, and February to May. You will also be invited to lead a workshop on your chosen research theme during your stay. Fellows are provided with computing facilities and office space in one of the buildings occupied by the department. The University Library and Martyrs’ Kirk have excellent collections for early modern historians.

To apply, please send the following materials to the Co-Directors of the Institute of Reformation Studies and Early Modern History, Professor Emily Michelson and Dr Jacqueline Rose:

• A letter of application
• A scheme of research for the project on which you will be engaged during your time in St Andrews
• A CV
• The names of two academic referees who should be asked to send references by the closing date.

Many congratulations to the team behind ‘History in our Bones: Uncovering Stories of Disability Through Time’, which has been awarded the 2026 Pieta Greaves Award for Engagement and Collaboration! This is a UK-wide prize given by the Society of Museum Archaeologists.

The judging panel for the award praised the exhibit as ‘a really exciting demonstration of the possibility for museum interpretation and display for engaging visitors with the detail and complexity of academic archaeological research.’

‘History in our Bones’ at the McManus Museum in Dundee has been extended and will now run through summer 2027. Go and see it if you can!

Call for Papers: Lutheranism and the British Isles!

We are pleased to announce an interdisciplinary conference on the theme of Lutheranism and the British Isles, exploring its influence across England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales from the Reformation to the present day. We are delighted that our keynote speakers will be Professor Alec Ryrie (Durham University) and Dr Korey Maas (Hillsdale College).

Proposals for twenty-minute papers are welcomed from postgraduate students, early career researchers, and established scholars across history, theology, literature, musicology, and material studies. Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words, with a curriculum vitae and a short biography, to [email protected] by 31 December 2026. Successful applicants will be notified by 31 January 2027. Panel proposals of three or four papers are also welcome, and limited support may be available for those who would otherwise be unable to attend.
