Sapienza University of Rome and the University of St Andrews are inviting applications for one funded PhD scholarship (in Greek or Latin language and literature or Ancient History) on our joint PhD degree programme.

The successful candidate will be supervised jointly by an academic member of staff from Rome and St Andrews. They will spend half their time at Rome and half at St Andrews, and graduate with a joint degree.

**Applications**
Applications and selection of candidates are administered by La Sapienza according to La Sapienza selection procedures.

Candidates wishing to apply for this scholarship will need to submit the usual documentation (including UG and PG degree diplomas, a project description, including a proposed timeline and information on which parts of the projects are to be carried out at Rome and St Andrews, respectively, a letter of motivation explaining why the joint degree is the right fit for the proposed project and other relevant documentation), pass a written examination which will take place in person at Rome and pass an oral examination, also in person at Rome.

This is the 6th workshop of PAGES VICS Working Group. It will reunite the VICS community and establish new research pathways that will allow VICS to improve reconstructions of past explosive volcanism, better our understanding of climate system response, and reveal the human consequences of volcanic climate shocks.

**Meeting objectives and themes**

• Volcanology and hazards
• Climate and volcanic proxies
• Observations and models
• Human impacts in history and archaeology

The workshop has a number of specific objectives:

1) Identify key knowledge gaps in proxy and historical datasets, and in our understanding of volcanic eruption (e.g. plume processes, atmospheric chemistry, or climate dynamics).
2) Develop an integrated strategy for eruption targets and research activities to address these knowledge gaps.
3) Establish new collaborations with cross-disciplinary groups (e.g., economists and food scientists) to identify how VICS datasets and models can be applied to ‘real-world’ systems.
4) Identify VICS community data needs (e.g., large eruption and/or impact databases) and agree a strategy on how to structure and deliver these.

Poverty was a defining element in late antique and early medieval societies, shaping economic structures, social relations, cultural values, and political hierarchies. This two-day conference will analyse the dynamics of poverty from an interdisciplinary perspective, examining how poverty drivers and resilience strategies marked the social and economic condition and lived experiences of destitute and vulnerable groups across the Mediterranean during a period of unprecedented historical transformations.

This conference is generously funded by the School of Classics, the Past and Present Society, the EDI committee/CUCD, and the Institute of Classical Studies.

The conference is part of the project "Land and Loyalty: the Politics of Land in the Late Roman World". It aims to re-examine the links between land and power in the late Roman world in their legal, socio-economic and material dimensions. By bringing together scholars from different disciplines and academic traditions, the event will survey recent academic developments and hope to establish a comprehensive, interdisciplinary framework for understanding land ownership in the period between 300 and 600 CE.
