Sofia welcomed the opportunity to give back by sharing her experience with prospective students starting out on their academic journey: "Volunteering for the University of Stirling at a student recruitment exhibition in Athens was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with the university and reflect on my own student journey. It was really rewarding to speak with prospective students, share my experiences and memories, and support those who are now considering the same path I once took. I would strongly encourage other alumni to get involved wherever they can. It’s a meaningful way to give back to the Stirling community that played such an important role in shaping our university years." 💚

Continuing with celebrating alumni for , Niru reflects on build community, creating opportunities and supporting the next generation: “The opportunities I found as a student, and the lifelong friendships I made helped shape both my career and the person I am today. I have valued the chance to stay connected through the alumni community, sharing industry experience with students and faculty. I volunteer because I believe in creating opportunities for others, building community, and breaking down barriers to access. By sharing our experiences and supporting the next generation, we can help create a more equitable future and equip people to tackle the twin challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change.” 💚

For Sinchana, it’s about giving back: “Volunteering allows me to give back to the university and community that played such an important role in shaping my journey. By sharing our experiences and insights, we can help students and recent graduates build confidence, navigate challenges, and unlock their potential.”

Lavanya highlights the impact of getting involved: “I would encourage other alumni to get involved because a single conversation or shared experience can have a lasting impact on someone’s future. Volunteering is a meaningful way to give back, inspire others, and stay connected to the Stirling community.”

This week is , and we want to say a huge thank you to all of the alumni who give their time to support the University of Stirling community. Your contribution makes a real difference.

As part of Volunteers’ Week, we are excited to relaunch our regional alumni networks around the world (previously known as chapters) and are looking for Network Ambassadors across the UK and beyond.

A special thank you to everyone who has volunteered as an ambassador in the past. We would love to welcome both familiar and new faces as we look to build things back up again.

As an ambassador, you would help to facilitate a couple of alumni gatherings each year, act as a local contact for fellow graduates, and help strengthen the Stirling alumni community in your area.

Why get involved?

✨ Grow your professional and social network
✨ Develop new skills and experiences for your CV
✨ Stay connected with the University community
✨ Support fellow alumni and future graduates

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, or if you would like to hear about other ways to get involved, please email [email protected].

Do you remember the excitement of your graduation day at Stirling? This summer, you can help welcome the next generation of Stirling alumni and be part of their celebrations.

We have two exciting opportunities to get involved with our summer graduations:

🎓 Volunteer at our alumni stand

Join the Alumni Relations team on campus during the graduation receptions on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 June. Chat with new graduates, welcome them to the alumni community, and help celebrate this special milestone. Volunteers would support the team for a few hours during the receptions. Get in touch to find out more!

Can’t make it on the day?

✍️ Send a handwritten message

Share a handwritten message of congratulations, encouragement, or advice for our newest graduates. Messages will be digitalised and displayed at the alumni stand throughout the celebrations.

How to participate:

1. Write a short message of congratulations, advice or words of encouragement on plain white paper using a black pen

2. Take a clear, well-lit photo (ensuring the message isn’t obstructed by shadows) or scan it

3. Email it to us at [email protected], telling us your name and year of graduation

To volunteer on the day, submit a message by post, or find out more, email [email protected].

The Walking of the Marches is a public celebration of an ancient ritual which is open to students, staff, and alumni, and is organised by local volunteers. 💚

Part of the history and heritage of Stirling, the Walking of the Marches is when officials inspect their boundaries, or marches, to ensure they are intact and have not been encroached upon.

The main inspectors of the marches are known as Birlawmen, and among them is Professor Kirstie Blair, Deputy Principal (Academic).

The celebration sees the Birlawmen check the marches are intact and have been marked in the traditional manner by the turning of turfs.

They inform the Captain of the Birlawmen, who conveys a report to the Lord Provost, Lord Dean of Guild and Deacon Convenor of the Seven Incorporated Trades, who are then invited to accompany the
Birlawmen in a colourful celebratory procession through the city to the historic Cowane's Hospital, where entertainment is provided.

Staff and students who would like to attend this free event are encouraged to gather at Port Street, outside Nationwide Building Society, at 10.45am, before forming a group and joining the procession, which sets off at 11am from the rotunda at the foot of King Street.
