A Fantastic First Day in Tanzania!

Students from both colleges, Stockton Sixth Form College and Prior Pursglove College (Official) have enjoyed an excellent first day in Tanzania as they begin the final stage of this year’s Atomix Educational Trust international programme.

The day started with an orientation session, where students were introduced to the two projects they will be supporting throughout their stay – the Teaching Project and the Medical Project. This provided a valuable insight into the important work they will be undertaking over the coming days and the impact they can make within the local community.

Following orientation, students took part in a guided tour of Arusha, giving them their first opportunity to experience the culture, atmosphere and daily life of this vibrant Tanzanian city. They then enjoyed an introductory Swahili lesson, learning some key phrases that will help them engage with local people and immerse themselves more fully in the experience.

To round off a memorable first day, the group came together to celebrate Isabella’s birthday, making it an extra special occasion and a wonderful way to begin what promises to be an unforgettable adventure.

We look forward to sharing more updates as our students continue their journey in Tanzania.

Good Bye Year 13's

Today, Stockton Sixth Form College held a fantastic Leavers' Event, the college community came together to celebrate the incredible contributions, achievements and memories made during their time at Stockton Sixth Form College.

The morning was filled with a true celebration, laughter and recognition, with students receiving Gold, Silver and Bronze Atomix Plus Certificates alongside a range of fun awards. From "Most Likely to Be Famous" to staff awards such as "Great Staff Storyteller", there were plenty of memorable moments that reflected the unique personalities and talents of this year's cohort.

It was a truly wonderful send-off and a fitting way to mark the end of their journey with us.

A huge thank you goes to Lisa (compare and brains behind the event) and Irie from the LRC, together with our new Enrichment Coordinator, Ruby, whose hard work and creativity helped make the event such an unforgettable occasion.

To all of our Year 13 students – thank you for being part of our college community. We wish you every success and happiness for the future. Once part of Stockton Sixth Form College, always part of the Stockton Sixth Form College family.

Tanzania 2026 – the final chapter of another incredible year of international opportunities begins! They Have Arrived!

Students from both Stockton Sixth Form College and Prior Pursglove College (Official) have officially arrived in Tanzania as part of the final international visit of this year’s Atomix Educational Trust International Strategy.

After a long journey, the group has landed safely at Kilimanjaro International Airport and there is a real sense of adventure as they begin this exciting experience.

Over the coming days, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Tanzanian culture, develop new skills, build international friendships and take part in a range of educational and community-based activities that will create memories to last a lifetime.

Students from Stockton Sixth Form College's Aviation Operations programme recently enjoyed an exciting and informative visit to RAF Leeming, gaining first-hand insight into the wide range of careers and specialist roles available within the Royal Air Force.
Throughout the day, students explored several key areas across the base, each providing a unique perspective on life in the RAF. The visit began in the Engineering Workshop, where students witnessed aircraft components being manufactured on site. Seeing precision engineering in action helped them appreciate the expertise and attention to detail required to keep aircraft safe and operational.

Students then visited the Vehicle Maintenance section, learning about the vital role played by engineers and technicians in maintaining the RAF’s extensive ground fleet. A tour of the gymnasium followed, where they discovered the physical standards expected across a variety of RAF careers and the training programmes designed to support personnel throughout their service.

After lunch, the group met a recently qualified RAF chef in the Catering Department. Students were fascinated to learn about the diversity of the role, which can range from preparing meals in challenging field conditions to delivering high-quality dining experiences at Chequers.

A particular highlight of the day was a visit to 34 Squadron RAF Regiment, where students had the opportunity to handle RAF fi****ms, try on the equipment carried by RAF Regiment personnel, and learn about the anti-drone technology currently used to protect RAF operations.

The visit concluded at No. 11 Squadron RAF, where students toured an RAF Hawk training aircraft. Stepping inside the cockpit and seeing the aircraft’s training systems up close proved to be an inspiring experience and a memorable end to a fantastic day.

The Aviation Operations Programme, supported by Aviation Generation continues to provide students with unique opportunities to engage directly with industry professionals and explore potential career pathways. To round off a successful year of guest speakers and employer engagement activities, students will also be joined virtually on Friday by Sir Gerry Mayhew, who will deliver the final guest presentation before the summer break.

Yesterday, Stockton Sixth Form College students,Mia and Rachel represented the college at the prestigious IRIS Conference in Manchester, where they presented their academic research poster to an audience of more than 350 delegates.
Selected from over 210 schools and colleges across the country, Mia and Rachel were invited to present their original research on the impact of melting sea ice in the Canadian Arctic. Their work attracted significant interest, and they confidently shared both their findings and the wider implications of their research with fellow students, researchers and education professionals.
Throughout the day, they attended presentations from leading researchers, gaining valuable insights into careers in scientific research and the diverse opportunities available within STEM fields. They also explored a wide range of student-led projects from across the UK and took part in discussions about the research process, methodology and the real-world significance of their work.
This is an outstanding achievement for both students and a testament to their dedication, curiosity and academic excellence. Mia and Rachel are fantastic ambassadors for Stockton Sixth Form College and an inspiring example of young women succeeding in STEM subjects.

Students from Stockton Sixth Form College recently took part in a fascinating fieldwork experience with the Tees Rivers Trust, contributing to an important conservation project focused on the critically endangered European eel.

Working alongside conservation specialists, students took part in a survey of the European eel, a Red List species whose numbers have declined significantly due to a range of environmental pressures, including illegal trafficking to Asia, where the species is considered a delicacy.

During the session, students gained valuable hands-on experience by helping to process and record data from 179 eels, which averaged approximately 7cm in length. The eels were carefully transferred from an eel trap into small measuring bags, allowing students to safely count, assess and measure each specimen before releasing them back into the river.

The project forms part of a long-running research programme that has been collecting data since 2012 to better understand eel populations and support conservation efforts across the River Tees. As a key species within the local ecosystem, monitoring the health of eel populations plays an important role in protecting biodiversity throughout the region.

This was an excellent opportunity for students to apply their environmental science knowledge in a real-world setting, contributing directly to meaningful conservation work while developing valuable field research skills.

Environmental Science students at Stockton Sixth Form College recently welcomed Elinor from Newcastle University for an engaging and thought-provoking session exploring the remarkable potential of algae.

Students discovered the wide range of applications for algae across the medical, food and beauty industries, gaining an insight into how this sustainable resource is being used to address real-world challenges. They also examined a fascinating case study of algae farming in Indonesia, learning how it is helping to transform communities by providing reliable incomes, absorbing carbon dioxide and acting as a natural coastal defence.

The session concluded with a hands-on activity where students created and handled alginate, a material derived from algae, before developing their own innovative ideas for future algae-based products. It was an excellent opportunity for students to combine scientific knowledge with creativity while exploring the role of sustainability in shaping the industries of tomorrow.

Congratulations to our Stockton Sixth Form College Compass leavers!

They have now completed their GCSEs and are heading off for a well earned break before moving onto the next stage of their journey.

Some will be returning to Stockton Sixth Form while others are progressing to other local colleges or work based opportunities.
