This afternoon we got the chance to create some enrichment for the rodents as well as building up confidence in handling them. We timed the different rodents going through the maze and offered them a tasty treat at the end. We also celebrated Lulu’s birthday a day early

🌊 Skills Pathway Visit to the National Marine Aquarium 🐠

Yesterday, our Skills Pathway students enjoyed a fantastic trip to the National Marine Aquarium, where they had the opportunity to explore a wide variety of marine life and learn more about the incredible ecosystems found beneath the waves.

As part of the visit, students also took part in an interactive workshop led by the Aquarium’s education team. This session helped them develop their understanding of marine habitats, conservation, and the importance of protecting our oceans, while encouraging curiosity and hands-on learning throughout the day.

It was a brilliant experience that supported learning beyond the classroom, and the students engaged really well, asking thoughtful questions and showing great enthusiasm. A big thank you to the National Marine Aquarium team for a memorable and inspiring visit! 🌍✨

🐾 Vocation Pathway Trip to Dartmoor Zoo 🐾

Yesterday, a group of our Vocation Pathway students enjoyed an exciting and enriching visit to Dartmoor Zoo! It was a fantastic opportunity for them to see a wide range of animals up close, from impressive big cats to fascinating reptiles, bringing their learning to life outside the classroom.

In the afternoon, students took part in an engaging Conservation Workshop led by Izzy, a member of the Dartmoor Zoo team. This session gave them the chance to deepen their understanding of conservation and different habitats, including the important roles of in-situ and ex-situ environments.

The day was a great mix of hands-on learning, curiosity, and fun, and the students represented themselves brilliantly throughout. A huge thank you to Dartmoor Zoo and Izzy for such a memorable and educational experience! 🌍✨

Cracker is a firm favourite with the learners since he arrived on the yard 3 weeks ago. Can’t wait to see him with a mini door on his stable so he can look out at the world around him. He has a great wardrobe of rugs too
Holly decided to do her health checking assessment with him this week, tying him up was a little different to the bigger horses we work with.

Today while working in the tropical room we moved two baby macleay stick insects and checked through the eggs. From doing this we thought we would create a little reel and included the snails after noticing how many baby snails we have too. Will try and create more of these Duchy College

It’s been a busy few weeks for the skills learners in their animal care session.
We found the doves sitting on some eggs last week and got to watch Liberty candling them. Excitingly we should have some chicks shortly. We have also been monitoring the weight of our college cats which has been a great experience for the learners.

This week we have looked into learning about the bearded dragon and crested gecko, understanding why their bodies are built the way they are and finding out fun facts.

In the photo the bearded dragon is cooling itself down by opening his mouth, a bit like a dog panting.
Also the crested gecko has no eyelids so cleans his eyes with his tongue
