A huge thank you to everyone from St John Fisher Catholic College, Newcastle-under-Lyme, for visiting our Biomedical Science laboratories a few weeks ago! 🧪🔬

It was fantastic to welcome you and give you a taste of what a day in the life of a Biomedical Science student at looks like 🫶

Throughout the session, students stepped into the role of Biomedical Scientists by working through a real-life patient case.

They:

💊 Counted leukaemia cancer cells before and after treatment to assess the effectiveness of therapy.

🦠 Performed the EUCAST disk diffusion method, testing different antibiotic disks to determine the most effective treatment, while exploring how antibiotics are prescribed and why antimicrobial resistance is such an important global issue.

🩸 Investigated blood grouping to identify the patient’s blood type and determine compatible blood for transfusion, before putting their new skills into practice by discovering their own blood group!

We hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we enjoyed having you, and that it provided an exciting insight into the vital work Biomedical Scientists do every day. 💙🔬

Good Luck for the rest of the academic year and your final year next year! We hope to see you all again soon! Also we apologise for the delay in posting these photos due to technical difficulties ☹️

If you’d like your school or college to come and participate in an amazing outreach session with us, please contact our schools and colleges team [email protected], call 01782292773 or visit https://www.staffs.ac.uk/schools-colleges for more information! 📖
