Student Accommodation Appeal

Assistant Professor in Marine Energy

We’re looking for an Assistant Professor in Marine Energy to join the academic team at Heriot-Watt University's Orkney Campus.

The role will support the delivery of our masters programmes based in Orkney, and collaborate with academics across the University involved in our Global Research Institutes (GRIs).

This is also a unique opportunity to work alongside partners in a community at the centre of marine energy development.

Calling all Orkney residents aged 18+!

Heriot-Watt University Orkney International Marine Science Master's student Elaina is inviting local people to take part in a Kelp Histories and Futures Mapping Workshop next Thursday at the Robert Rendall Building.

This participatory workshop will explore local knowledge, cultural history, and future possibilities for kelp cultivation around Orkney Mainland. Your participation can help shape early research on how kelp cultivation may fit within Orkney's marine environment.

Whether you have family stories linked to kelp, or are simply interested in Orkney's marine future, Elaina would love to hear from you.

Do you have a spare room in your home, or a rental property coming vacant soon? Would you like to let it to one of our MSc students starting in September, for 12 months? We would love to hear from anyone in or around Stromness who can offer lodgings (renting a spare room in your house), or will have a vacant rental property (1-bed, or for 2 to share), to help our students become part of our community here in Stromness.

We are helping one student to look for a pet-friendly family home for him and his family (1 well-behaved dog and 4 adults), plus a pet-friendly place for a couple with their well-behaved small dog.

🌊 Coastal Communities’ Experiences Survey is now live!
We want to hear from you.

If you live, work, or spend time in coastal areas of Orkney, Aberdeen, or the Humber region, we’d love to hear your experiences.

We’re exploring how nearby offshore wind and oil & gas activities shape everyday life, including things like:

- Changes to local infrastructure (roads, ports, transport, community facilities)
- Access to the coast and marine spaces
- Visual changes to the landscape and seascape
- Sense of identity, belonging, and community

The survey uses interactive maps, so you can point to places that matter to you and share your experiences in a way that feels grounded in your local area.

It is incredibly important to increase the space for community voices in coastal resilience and marine energy planning.

Every response helps us build a clearer picture of what coastal communities are experiencing today—and what support they may need in the future.

Orkney student Katharine (MSc in Marine Renewable Energy) was back home in Edinburgh this weekend, to take part in a 15k Tough Mudder course in aid of Endometriosis UK, together with her mum and boyfriend. Well done Katharine, for completing the challenge and raising over £400 in the process! 💪🏃‍♀️‍➡️🏆🥇
