Here is an excellent short video about counselling for students made by De Montfort University.

I am wondering how many University of Sunderland students and staff use Skype video calling. I am wondering this because it occurred to me that it might be possible to offer video counselling. Obviously there would be little point in offering the service if there is unlikely to be take up. Replies either here, or to [email protected]

Counselling offers counselling to staff as well as to students. Confidentiality is handled with great care.

Counselling is one of several services in the University's Student Services department. Each service is distinct, operates autonomously, and maintains individual confidentiality with the students it is helping to support. However, when necessary, the various services will interface, for example, by referral or liaison, in order to improve the quality of the support offered to students. Referral is easy, not least because most of the services are located on one floor of the Edinburgh Building, City Campus. Liaison between services is handled more cautiously so as to minimise issues concerning confidentiality.
Each service is staffed by professionals, so Counselling is, unsurprisingly, staffed by highly-experienced, qualified counsellors. Counselling is a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as a member of the Association for University and College Counsellors.

This section shows the end of the contact, followed by Carl Rogers explaining about his experience and what he was doing. This is well worth listening to.

The counselling relationship is now more fully developed, which is amazing given the context of being surrounded by a film crew. A few minutes into this part, Gloria sighs, smiles and says "That's solved. And I didn't even solve a thing." Such an emotional contrast to five minutes before. From 7 minutes into this section the intimacy is intense. They are working together apparently oblivious to everything except each other. From this arises Gloria's recogntion of what she did not receive from her father, and is currently receiving from Carl Rogers: non-judgmental acceptance, warmth, understanding and honesty.

Although the relationship between Gloria and Carl Rogers is no more than 15 minutes old, Gloria is already disclsoing very intimate and difficult material. Gloria feels heard, understood and accepted, and now she moves into areas that are no longer rehearsed. There is increasing sense of stuckness, and Carl Rogers helps her to stay in that stuck place - she sighs and discloses that she has a hopeless feeling. I love the authenticity of this moment.

This section introduces Gloria, and shows Carl Rogers starting to form a relationship with her. Notice how he carefully shows his understanding of what Gloria is saying. He also shows her both warmth and considerable respect. He accepts what she says, accepts her agenda, accepts her frequent changes in direction. Gradually the relationship deepens.
