Another successful story from our ERDF Graduate Internship Scheme recipient - Rise North East and their appointment of Research and Insight Intern, Chris Green (MSc Inequality and Society graduate).

Rise North East are a charity funded and supported by Sport England in addition to a number of other national and local organisations, and are part of a network of 42 Active Partnerships across the country. Examples include leisure teams, public health, as well as the education, housing and criminal justice sectors. Their aim is to make it easier and a more attractive proposition for people to be physically active.

Chris explained how the Scheme has supported his career aspirations; “After completing my Masters, I really wanted to continue to be involved in researching inequalities, particularly in the NE, and the opportunity at Rise fitted that perfectly. The Internship Scheme has given me the opportunity to put the skills I gained during my studies into practice”.

The scheme that has successfully connected graduate talent with regional Small to Medium Enterprises has come to an end. It’s rewarding to reflect on and celebrate the positive impact our local graduates have made. Congratulations again to Rise and Chris!

University of Sunderland Graduate Ryan Myers and Northumbria University Graduate Harry Olvanhill were appointed as Graduate Interns at Kail & Co. Limited. Harry secured his graduate position in 2019, having graduated with MEng Mechanical Engineering. Whereas Ryan completed BEng Mechanical Engineering and commenced his employment in 2021.

Neil Foster, the Director of Kail & Co said: “ It’s changed the business. We wouldn’t have been able to do what we currently do now without Harry’s input. We’ve got guys that are very highly skilled, but guys that are in their kind of 30s, 40s you know, long time since they’ve been to college etc. So taking the digital elements, the automation, the robotics, we would have probably still been trying to establish that first cell had we not brought somebody in with the kind of grounding that Harry’s degree gave him. And like I say, that’s exactly why we’ve done the same again with Ryan.”

We are very proud to present yet another successful story of Brooke Gerrens, who has been appointed as a Graphic Designer & Media Manager at The HLF Group - Interiors by HLF.

When asked how the Graduate Internship scheme has helped develop her career so far, she said: “The graduate scheme has given me the opportunity to start my career journey, after graduating I found it extremely difficult to get into the design industry as all companies wanted to hire people with at least 2 years inhouse experience, however I never had work placements due to covid, so when I discovered the graduate scheme, I knew I had to take the chance and I am so glad I did.”

Rachel Conroy, CEO of The HLF Group explained the positive impact of internship on the business; “The internship has had a hugely positive impact on our business. Previously we outsourced a lot of this work which took time and they didn’t know our products as well. I believe we can clearly demonstrate we have won business through the work Brooke has produced."

We are proud to have supported Brooke and the HLF group.

Grace said “The Graduate Internship scheme has helped me develop my career by allowing me to work for a company that has taught me several useful skills. I have gained a lot of confidence, and skills such as organisation and personal time management. I have also had the opportunity to work with some great people. I have also really enjoyed helping to plan and run events for the AoEA, for example, in person training events in Northern Ireland, and our Annual Summit that took part in July. ”

Her advice for students and graduates is to pay attention to the intentions of the company; she said: “I have particularly liked that the AoEA aims to improve the quality of education for children, and that everyone on the team is truly passionate about education and the wellbeing of children.”

University of Sunderland Internships team were delighted to support a local business Absolute Quality consultancy and are happy to hear of the continued success of graduate Ryan Doyle.

Ryan has become an invaluable member of Absolute Quality’s consultancy team bringing a fresh perspective and a unique skill set that has strengthened the team.

Lora Wilson from Absolute Quality’s consultancy said “One of the key questions we ask during interviews is ‘what do you love and what are you good at?’, which helps to better understand people’s strengths and what motivates them, so we already knew that Ryan shared key values that match our company values and he fit straight in from his first day. He came with a positive attitude, was eager to learn and not afraid to offer his support to the team.”

Ryan has obtained a number of qualifications in his first year, the main one being his Lead Auditor qualification. He was undergoing his NEBOSH Health & Safety qualification and completing IEMA Environmental Management Course.
Ryan’s advice for students and graduates is “to look for something they are interested in and have a passion for. This may take longer, but ultimately it will lead to them to a role that motivates them and they look forward to.”

The company’s aim is to keep growing and helping more businesses to gain the confidence to address the challenges and opportunities they face, through working in partnership with their team at all levels to develop their people and processes through the implementation of business management systems and training.
