University of Sunderland - Debating Society

University of Sunderland - Debating Society The University of Sunderland's Debating Society is a brand new society set up for the start of the 2013/14 academic year.

Come and have your say on anything going on in the world and some of the worlds most annoying unanswered questions! Started by two students who often liked to argue about life's irrelevant things the society aims to combat the issues that are most prominent in modern day society both across the country, world and Sunderland itself. The society uses British Parliamentary Rules for the formal debati

ng setting but we also like to have some fun...

University isn't all about arguing about Human Rights so we want to add some entertainment value. Not only will we be tackling issues such as "Gay Marriage: Right or Wrong?", we will be tackling the issues which have always caused arguments among households for years; "Are Jaffa Cakes cakes or biscuits?", "Is Garlic Bread really the future?", and "Can Gerrard and Lampard play together in the midfield?". Points will be awarded for historical/factual accuracy as well as comedic value - just like Dave's Argumental! We hope to tackle issues going on around the University as well, so look out for our Special Editions which will come every semester!

Hi everyone!
I know the debate society has been quiet recently so apologies for that!

Yesterday I had a meeting with the manager of the society house and I just want to share with you what was discussed at the meeting, if you have any queries or question please do not hesitate to ask myself or Stephen.

Right firstly, to become an official society, all members must buy a society card. The society card is £10. I thought that it was a lot to pay for our society because I thought we would not benefit, however after the meeting it is totally worth it. Here is our first idea how we can get a use out of it... We are going to plan a trip for in the middle of January. The trip will be to Edinburgh where we will visit the Scottish parliament and sit in on a debate. We are also going to see if we can arrange a mock debate with the university as well as a day out in Edinburgh. Now, because we will have our cards it will be completely free! A mini bus there is included which will cost the university £400 but we will have already paid in our £10 card :)

As you know our meetings are informal and held at a pub. This will still be kept, however some will be held in the library or city space and these will be held more like a competition. A debate competition will be held in the lecture theatre and will be open for people who are also not apart of the society to watch. Posters will be made for that! The topic will be on 'is there racism in football?'

I know that it might be confusing for you all to know when meetings are held, so a timetable for each month will be posted on this page so you all know what is happening. The timetable will include, formal meetings, informal meetings (so at cooper rose) and social nights out.

If you have not been to the society before then trust me it is not to late to join so please come along to our next meeting! For all of you that have been before, thanks for coming and I really hope you are interested in being an official member and buy a membership card. Please don't forget how good this will look on your CV and plus it is fun!

Thank you for taking the time to read my very long message, and more will be discussed and explained at our next meeting on the 27th at 7pm Cooper rose. Please let us know whether you are coming or not.

Thanks very much, Adrianna :)

Anyone who wishes to debate something at the next meeting feel free to post it here. Debates can be about anything and everything... :)

Hi everyone!

The date of the next meeting is Thursday 27th November at 6:30pm at the Cooper Rose pub (opposite Priestman building) near City Campus. As stated earlier it has been changed to a Thursday to allow those who cannot attend on a Monday to take part too :)

We are also only going to meet once a month now as a lot of people have mentioned that they have assignments to do and meeting more than once a month would be too much.

Hi everyone!

Would anyone be interested in having a social night out in sunderland Wednesday? I know it's bonfire night but if you have plans just meet up after! Let me know if interested and I will inbox you some more details!

Thank you :)

Hey guys!

How would everyone feel about changing the day of the debate meetings to Thursday? This is to give the people who can't make it on a Monday night a chance to participate in the debate meetings?

28/10/2014

Morning everyone!

I hope everyone enjoyed last night's debate meeting. It was nice to see so many new faces.

For the next meeting we are going to introduce 'timing'. Basically this means that the person who is talking has a set time to get their point across and must finish what they are saying within their allotted time, then wait for their turn again. While a person is talking no one else can interrupt and they must wait until the other person's time is up to make their rebuttal. We feel that now the group has quite a few members we can start introducing more debate rules and regs :)
