Our Esports department have had incredible progress in the year so far with record numbers of students and incredible energy at the National Esports Performance Campus. 🎮

They had an exciting visit from the Mayor of Sunderland, Ehthesham Haque, who shared his enthusiasm for gaming and spoke about the exciting future ahead for the region.

Recently, the team also took part in an incredible North vs South charity tournament against Suffolk New College, raising money for SpecialEffect – a charity bringing inclusion to gaming for those who are physically disabled.

And to top it all off… they won the tournament! 🏆

Recently, we brought together apprentices and employer partners to celebrate success at our Business & Apprenticeship Awards.

It was inspiring to hear the stories behind each award. From learners returning to education later in life, to apprentices just starting their careers, each story reflected the confidence, skills and opportunities gained from their journey so far.

Taylor Grange, a previous college alumni, has recently made the incredible achievement of winning the Young Chef of the Year 2025 competition! 🌟

They spoke to Luxe magazine on their culinary journey and how their time studying at our City Campus in our City Bistro supported them.

🔵 How did you find your way into cooking – and into the team at 21?
🔵 'By chance, really — and with the right people pushing me along the way. I was working as a dishwasher at a local pub and they were short staffed, so I started helping out in the kitchen too. Then a new chef came in, Michael was his name, and he’d worked for Terry [Laybourne] years ago.
He saw something in me and said that I should go to Sunderland College and learn to cook properly. While I was there, my tutor organised a trial shift for me at 21. At the time, I still didn’t have a lot of self confidence and so I wasn’t actually going to go, I didn’t think I’d get the job.
But my tutor explained that if I didn’t go, I’d regret it for the rest of my life. He was right. I’m so glad I did go, and with his support, the rest is history as they say.'
