Most people know that graffiti can be a nuisance, but when that graffiti contains racist, homophobic, extremist or other hateful messages, it becomes much more than a vandalism issue. It can make people feel unwelcome, unsafe and targeted in their own communities.

Yet, while graffiti is often removed quickly, valuable information about patterns and community tensions can be lost.

That is where Professor Lella Nouri's StreetSnap platform comes in. StreetSnap allows law enforcement, local authority and community teams to photograph and upload geo-tagged reports of hate graffiti and other visual signs of intolerance, which are logged on a central platform.

StreetSnap can then help identify hotspots, monitor trends, improve collaboration between agencies, and support more effective interventions, helping to create safer, more cohesive communities.

A new book by Swansea University historians explores how societies around the world engage with monuments linked to difficult, divisive and contested histories. 📖

Contested Histories: Global Perspectives on the Past, Present and Future of Public Monuments brings together leading academics to examine how monuments and memorials are created, interpreted, challenged and transformed. Drawing on examples from across the globe, the book explores responses ranging from artistic interventions and symbolic alterations to the removal of monuments.

Edited by Dr Simon John and Professor Tomás Irish from Swansea University’s Department of History, alongside Swansea graduate Hannah Lyons, the collection grew out of a major international conference hosted by the University in 2021 and highlights how debates around public monuments can help us better understand the past, present and future of collective remembrance.

From football shirt sponsorship to ‘free bet’ promotions, Swansea University research is helping shape the debate around gambling advertising 🎰

Evidence from our Gambling Research, Education and Treatment (GREAT) Centre features prominently in an influential House of Lords report calling for a comprehensive ban on gambling advertising, marketing and sponsorship.

Swansea research also informed key areas of the report, including gambling branding in Premier League broadcasts, ‘free bet’ offers, financial inducements and gambling companies’ use of social media marketing.

Professor Simon Dymond, Director of the GREAT Centre, said: “We are proud our research has played such a central role in shaping the Committee's findings.”
