New research from Swansea University’s National Centre for Su***de Prevention and Self-Harm Research (NCSR) highlights the complex relationship between social media, self-harm content and online safety. 📱

The research involved a survey of more than 5,000 respondents, alongside in-depth interviews with 17 people, most of whom had a history of self-harm and all of whom had viewed self-harm content online. Participants were asked about their experiences of self-harm and suicide-related content, as well as the restrictions, safety messaging and platform features introduced in recent years.

The study found that while restrictions can help reduce exposure to harmful content, they may also unintentionally limit access to recovery stories, peer support and safe online communities. Importantly, almost 90% of respondents wanted greater personal control over the content they see, rather than blanket restrictions.

The findings reinforce the need for policies and platform features to be co-designed, tested and evaluated with young people and those with lived experience before wider implementation, helping to ensure online spaces are both safe and supportive.

For the first time this summer, a group of Engineering students took part in a 15-day international Summer School programme in China, delivered in collaboration with Nanjing Tech University through the JEI partnership. 🇨🇳

From navigating international travel and exploring Chinese culture to engaging with staff and students in Nanjing, our students were supported throughout every stage of the journey. Beyond the classroom, they embraced daily life, built confidence, developed global perspectives, and created lifelong memories.

The programme's success highlights the importance of student support, cross-cultural collaboration, and providing meaningful international education experiences that prepare students to thrive in a global community.
