On 5 and 7 May, Year 8 students took part in a multidisciplinary visit to London, blending their studies in English and Geography.

The trip was linked to this year’s guiding question in English: ‘Where are we?’ which examines the importance of place in literature. To deepen this connection, students participated in interactive drama workshops led by actors from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, specifically tailored to their current study of ‘Macbeth’. This was complemented by a guided tour of the theatre, where we were fortunate enough to witness rehearsals for the upcoming production of Bertolt Brecht’s ‘Mother Courage and Her Children’.

Alongside these literary explorations, Geography students applied their classroom knowledge of rivers to the Thames and explored how London has changed temporally and spatially through fieldwork at both Battersea Power Station and Bankside. A riverboat trip between these two landmarks provided a vantage point from which to observe the activity and physical transformations along the River Thames, offering a real-world perspective on how urban environments shift over time.

The Year 7 student played the Wicked Witch and the Year 8 student played Dragon, Donkey’s love interest.

Both students brought great energy and character to their roles, with the Wicked Witch delivering solo singing lines and Dragon performing the solo song “Forever.”

150 Year 10 students took part in a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award training weekend.

On the Saturday they were trained in key expedition skills including navigation and map reading, cooking using Trangias, setting up tents, and basic first aid; equipping them with the knowledge needed for independent travel.

On the Sunday, participants put these skills into practice by navigating their way in groups of 4-7 to Fordcombe, working effectively together.

All students completed the training successfully, demonstrating excellent teamwork, resilience, and enthusiasm throughout what proved to be a fun and valuable weekend in fairly good British weather.

23 Year 12 Mathematicians worked with the Maths Department and the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) to successfully run an engaging day of challenges for visiting primary school pupils.

For the TGS students, organising the event was good preparation for running a very similar event in the Netherlands in the coming months.
