YOUNG ACTOR NEEDED!

I hope you're keeping well in these 'interesting times'.

This summer I’m involved in a production of Richard III by Kernow Chamber Players, with a live chamber orchestra and singing – not me, luckily for all concerned! It starts rehearsing on 30th July and has performances on 12th and 13th August, both in Cornwall.

They need someone to play the older prince, and I wondered if you know anyone who might enjoy doing a bit of Shakespeare. It’s not a huge time commitment, as there are only two shows, the princes don’t have to do very much rehearsing and there aren’t too many lines to learn. They’re looking for a confident child with a playing age of about 11 or 12 – they say, ‘ideally not a broken voice’. (How early do boys’ voices break?)

If you can think of anyone, please message me and I'll send you a scene for them to look at, as well as contacts for Harriet the composer, who can provide details of dates when the princes are needed. She might ask suitable actors to do a little Zoom audition with her and Tama, the director.

Thanks for reading this far!

Emma

One of the reasons running a youth theatre is so entertaining is the things you overhear during the creation of short plays. We'd given a group these pictures as a start point, and heard this: '" Hello, Bonnie Tyler, who's been jilted like Miss Havisham. Would you like some cheese?" That can be your line.'

(How do they know who Bonnie Tyler is?)

Sadly, the line never made the final edit.

We're looking forward to going back to Bedlam Youth Theatre after the half-term break. Getting up early on a Saturday - especially when the weather is this horrid - is more than worth it for the surreal entertainment provided for us!

We do still have some spaces left, so please feel free to phone or email us to find out more: 0781 150 1250 or [email protected].

And please share amongst your Cornwall-based friends.

Thank you!

Some lovely feedback we received from an ex-student last autumn:

Bedlam has been an amazing group to be part of. They have helped me develop skills and knowledge considerably whilst making it so enjoyable that it helped me decide that I would like a career in theatre. The support and experience they provide is truly wonderful. Going to Bedlam has always been the best part of my Saturdays. You get to work with so many interesting people to create unique pieces and characters. I would highly recommend getting involved with this group. Thank you so much to you and Rory for everything you've done for me, words can't describe how appreciative I am of you guys xx

'Because it's fun!'. This is the answer that comes up most often when you ask members of Bedlam Youth Theatre why they give up two precious non-school hours to come along each week.

It's great fun. But young actors are also learning a craft, using skills that are useful for all aspects of life, and sometimes getting the chance to take part in productions for film and TV.

Bedlam Youth Theatre is run at The Pattern Hall, Charlestown, St Austell, Cornwall. It takes place on termtime Saturdays, and has two groups: the younger (aged around 7-11) runs from 10-12; the older (12-18 approx) from 12.30-2.30.

Sessions are run by Emma Spurgin Hussey and Rory Wilton, experienced workshop leaders and professional actors for theatre, voiceover, film and TV, known for work on Poldark, Doc Martin, Fisherman's Friends and much more.

At Bedlam, children learn to balance the discipline of learning a skill with the fun that is the lasting memory of all its members.

If you know a creative child, a shy child, an energetic child, an imaginative child ... send them to Bedlam! First sessions are always free, and prices after that are very affordable.

For more information, or just for a chat, please ring 01872 272795 or 0781 150 1250. Alternatively, email [email protected].

Thank you! There are now over 300 people following Bedlam on Facebook. But there's always room for more! So, if you know anyone who might be interested in what the company offers, particularly our youth theatre, which begins again tomorrow (27th April) after the Easter break, then please do invite them to give us a like too! Once again, many thanks for your interest and support. All the very best, Emma and Rory
