This summer, our staff, students and local community members became ‘human beavers’ in an exciting hands-on project with our SPF Future is Green Project in collaboration with The Grower Ltd .

The groups worked together to build a series of ‘trickle dams’ starting at the source of Mingoose stream that eventually meets the sea at Chapel Porth. The goal was a simple but powerful one: to slow the flow of water right from its starting point, allowing it to seep gradually into the landscape.

Now, after the recent heavy rains, we can see these dams working in all their glory. It’s fantastic to see them doing exactly what they were designed to do: holding back the water, collecting sediment and refilling the historic ponds that were uncovered in the early stages of the project.

It’s a brilliant demonstration of how natural processes can be gently nudged to help restore our local environment. 🍃

Are you aware of what’s actually going on with the planet and what you can do about it?

🐠Coral Bleaching – 70-90% of reefs die (ocean acidification + warming)
❄️Arctic Ice Loss – Summer sea ice shrinks by 13% per decade
🌊Sea Level Rise – ~20cm since 1900 (coastal flooding worsens)
🔥Wildfires – Burn areas double in some regions (e.g. Australia, California)
🌱Crop Failures – Staple foods like wheat/maize see reduced yields

We’re still buzzing from an unforgettable weekend at the Rock Oyster Festival, where our talented Truro and Penwith College students had the incredible opportunity to observe and support back-of-house operations, gaining hands-on experience alongside some of the industry’s biggest names!

🍹 The Lost Gardens of Heligan’s Louise and the team wowed the crowd with a stunning menu featuring Trevethan Distillery spiced rum cocktail with a dehydrated apricot rim, Heligan rack of lamb with braised corabi and summer greens followed by apricot and almond upside-down cake with Trewithen Dairy clotted cream

🐟 Students watched Jack Stein (Rick Stein Restaurants) and Tony Duce create a sensational fish stew on stage, followed by a Charcuterie Masterclass with Dhruv Baker, where our students got stuck in, learning from the best!

🌿 Emily Scott and Joseph Fallowfield delivered an inspiring demo, while Thuy Diem Phan shared her incredible Vietnamese heritage through delicious dishes, all brilliantly compered by Steven Lamb.

This festival isn’t just about amazing food and drink, it’s about real industry connections, live learning, and unforgettable experiences for our students. Huge thanks to everyone involved for making it so special!
