Olympic Champion Hailey Duff Retires From International Curling
Olympic Champion Hailey Duff who made her debut at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games has decided to call time on a golden international curling career.
The 29 year old, who played lead for Eve Muirhead’s women’s curling team that claimed the only gold for Team GB at those Winter Olympics in 2022, also won gold as part of the same line-up at the European Curling Championships in Lillehammer in 2021, a month before winning the Olympic Qualifying Event (OQE) to qualify Great Britain for the Beijing Games.
During her career, the three-time national champion won a second European medal in the same year as her Olympic appearance and Duff was the only member of that Olympic gold medal winning team in the international line-up in Ostersund in 2022 that went on to claim a bronze medal. That same year, she was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for exceptional services to curling.
She also enjoyed success with former World Mixed Doubles Champion and fellow Olympic finalist Bobby Lammie, lifting the Euro Super Series Mixed Doubles Championship trophy in their first competitive outing together and her most recent international appearance saw her competing as second for Fay Henderson’s team at the BKT World Women’s Curling Championships in Calgary in March.
Hailey has also been an exemplar off the ice, dedicating much of her spare time to school and college visits and speaking opportunities using her own sporting journey to inspire others into curling and sport generally and she will be greatly missed from the international curling stage.
Commenting on her retirement from the international game, British Curling’s Performance Director Dave Leith said, “Hailey has enjoyed the greatest success at the pinnacle of our sport and throughout her career she has been a brilliant ambassador for Scottish and British Curling both on and off the ice during her time on the British Curling programme.
“Winning Olympic gold on your debut is something most athletes can only ever dream about and Hailey has used that example to encourage women and girls in sport as well as inspiring future generations of curlers and on behalf of everyone at British Curling we wish to thank Hailey for her invaluable contribution to the sport and we wish her every success in the future.”
