Corrie Ashton - Order Born of Chaos
MA Live Event Design
Created as part of her Major Project, Order Born of Chaos is an immersive, hand-drawn stop motion animation installation exploring the origins of the universe. Blending inspiration from Greek mythology with the Big Bang theory, Corrie set out to visualise the unknowable beginnings of everything, creating an abstract interpretation of what came before the world we recognise today.
The piece featured 580 individually drawn frames, forming a constantly shifting visual environment where no two frames are the same. Out of this chaos, a cohesive image gradually emerges.
Designed for a circular projection space, the installation places the viewer at the centre of the experience. By surrounding the audience with moving image, Corrie moves beyond traditional screen-based viewing to create something spatial, embodied, and deeply immersive.
Sound played a vital role in shaping the experience. Collaborating with fellow postgraduate student Charlie Stead, Corrie developed a spatial soundscape. Audio moves dynamically around the room, enhancing immersion and allowing audiences to feel part of the unfolding environment rather than simply observing it.
Technically, the project involved synchronising multiple projectors to create a wraparound visual, alongside producing the animation frame-by-frame using digital tools.
Reflecting on her time studying MA Live Event Design at the Academy of Live Technology, Corrie shared:
“I’ve learnt a lot of new skills whilst studying at ALT and built up my knowledge of what is achievable. I've focused mainly on projection mapping during my course and found it to be something I'm really interested and passionate about. Before I started at ALT, I had no knowledge in this area. I hope to continue learning more about it and hopefully find opportunities within this sector. It’s definitely sparked a new passion."
