International Women's Day - A Word on Body Positivity with Ellen Stephenson
To celebrate #InternationalWomensDay we are launching our annual STRONGHER campaign with 12 local secondary schools across North Tyneside, Newcastle & South Tyneside ππ
This year it is going to be a 3 month virtual campaign to empower young women & we can't wait to get started!
The theme this year is #ChooseToChallenge and in Workshop 1, we are focusing on challenging:
- How we feel about our bodies
- What we think our bodies should look like
- How we feel about ourselves
- Societal stereotypes & myths about the female body
- Social media we consume
- What we tell ourselves in the mirror
To kick off the week with a positive message, we spoke to Tyne Metropolitan College Indepenent Living student & GB Down Syndrome Swimming superstar Ellen Stephenson π
Listen to the positive messages Ellen has to spread to other young girls about overcoming challenges, living with down syndrome and being proud of her body π
Ellen, you are an amazing role model to us all & we are super proud to work with you on your journey in swimming & education!

Leadership Series - Kenya Wilkes
As part of #StudentVolunteerWeek we wanted to highlight our own Sport Development Team, in a light you might not have seen them in before. We will also be interviewing former students & sport industry leaders π
Today we are joined by former Tyne Metropolitan College student Kenya Wilkes who talks about how her experiences volunteering with StreetGames & in the Leadership Academy made her who she is today.
She is now studying Sport Coaching at Northumbria University and her dream is to be a PE teacher, speciaising in children with disabilities or additional needs.
Kenya travelled all over the UK & to Europe through her volunteering experiences, to places and people she would never have dreamed of.
Kenya's advice to young people who have never volunteered before is:
"I know it might be scary at first, but just do it. Don't hold back and don't give up. Just be yourself!"
Thank you Kenya from all of us at TyneMet! Wishing you all the best with the rest of your University studies!
