Following the installation of an external, publicly accessible wall-mounted defibrillator at the Masonic Hall, Gordon Street, Workington, on 20th October 2025 in memory of Billy Morley, the son of Very Worshipful Brother William Morley, the North West Ambulance Service kindly offered to deliver a defibrillator awareness session as part of their community outreach programme.

The Masonic Hall was delighted to host the event, continuing Freemasonry's commitment to supporting and engaging with the local community. To promote the session, flyers were delivered to nearby homes and posters were displayed in local shops and businesses, inviting members of the public to attend.

Kerry, from the North West Ambulance Service, led the session, quite literally taking to the floor of the Masonic Hall to deliver a highly informative and practical workshop. Attendees were guided through the essential steps to take when discovering someone who is unresponsive, whether a family member, friend, or member of the public.

Using interactive questioning throughout, Kerry encouraged participants to think through each stage of the emergency response, explaining not only what actions should be taken, but also why they are so important. The session covered recognising cardiac arrest, calling for help, performing CPR, and the confident use of a defibrillator.

Everyone who attended left with greater confidence, increased awareness, and a much better understanding of how to respond effectively in a life-threatening emergency. The event was a tremendous success and demonstrated the value of community education, while highlighting Freemasonry's ongoing commitment to supporting the wellbeing of the local community.

A successful event at Workington MH…

Workington Masonic Hall Takes a Gamble

What began as a passing thought from Norman Eve turned into a winning hand for Workington Masonic Hall, as the Management Committee decided to “take a gamble” and host a Casino Night at Gordon Street. As it turned out, they needn’t have worried — it proved to be a very safe bet indeed, thanks in no small part to Trevor Bromley, who rallied the brethren and ensured an excellent response.

With united support from all Lodges, the event was extremely well attended by brethren, families, and friends. Many commented on how refreshing it was to see the room so full for a social occasion, creating a lively atmosphere from the outset.
