Three Cumbrian organisations Pulling Together in aid of poverty…..
Cumberland and Westmorland Freemasons and Soroptimist International are working together to support a fantastic charity that aims to break the cycle of poverty through education and welfare. This has recently received a massive boost with the help of Frizington Veterans’ Club.
The Purple Community Fund (PCF) provides education, mentoring and learning for those that can't access school as well as nutrition programmes and disaster relief. Organisations can support them through collecting ring pulls from empty cans that would otherwise be wasted. Each ring pull, when upcycled into gift items, can be worth 3p and make a significant difference!
Soroptimist International Cockermouth & District has collected nearly 200,000 ring pulls in recent years: worth approximately £6000 to PCF. These efforts inspired the Freemasons in Cumbria to begin the same journey and collections across masonic centres are well underway.
Representatives of Cockermouth Soroptimists and local freemasons recently visited Frizington Veterans’ Club to thank them for a huge donation of ring pulls – nearly 30 kilograms! – that had been collected by Bar Steward John Burns. The club was delighted to hear how the ring pulls will be used to target poverty and are determined to continue collecting with renewed energy. Pictured are Committee member Paul McCarron and Bar Steward John along with Luke Jackson from Lewis Masonic Lodge in Whitehaven and Lindsay Edmiston, President of Cockermouth Soroptimists. Taking the picture was Masonic West Area Lead, Mark Edmiston.
Soroptimists and Freemasons are continuing to work with our local communities, helping make a real difference to those in need.
