A huge well done to our amazing Uniformed Public Service students who spent a whole day volunteering at The Yorkshire Marathon.

Joined by tutor Helen Perry, the learners helped to support thousands of people who took part in the Jane Tomlinson's Run For All event that starts and finishes at the University of York.

Working in the bag drop and collection area, the group played an important role in ensuring participants were reunited with their belongings efficiently, whilst offering encouragement and congratulations throughout the day.

The students also demonstrated excellent initiative and professionalism by assisting runners who required medical attention, helping to direct them to the appropriate support teams.

In addition, they helped resolve incidents involving lost property, including misplaced bags and keys.

This experience highlighted just how valuable volunteering can be, not only for the people that were supported, but also for the students themselves.

They demonstrated professionalism, teamwork, communication skills, problem-solving abilities and a commitment to helping others.

You all represented the college brilliantly and should be incredibly proud of yourselves.

Your hard work, dedication and positive attitude helped make the day a success for so many people.

A big well done to our Site Carpentry apprentice Luke Passingham for being Highly Commended in the East of England region for the UK Government 2026 National Apprenticeship & Skills Awards.

Luke, 37, is part of our Barratt Homes Redrow cohort and travels from Benfleet in Essex for his College tuition.

Congratulations, Luke. We are proud of your achievement!

National T Levels Week is kicking off with Motivational Monday and we have got an inspiring story to share this lunchtime...

When Tilly Allan started her T Level placement with McLaren Property on the York Central project, she did not anticipate playing a leading role in regenerating the park she played in throughout her childhood.

But that is the exciting responsibility Tilly has been handed even though she completed her two-year Business Leadership & Management course at York College in the summer.

Proving that a T Level can lead to opportunities, contacts and professional relationships that extend beyond the qualification, Tilly will continue to be consulted on and provide her input into how Back Park in Holgate can be improved as a social space for teenagers.

We’re excited to announce that, for a second year running, our Uniformed Public Services students are launching their Community Winter Clothing Drive and they would love your support!

As the temperatures drops, many in our community need warm clothing to get through the winter months.

This year is more important than ever, with our charity partners Carecent York explaining that this is the first year that they have had to buy socks, as their stock is so low.

It would be amazing to get as many donations as possible to help those stock levels rise again, ready for the winter ahead.

WHAT IS NEEDED:

Coats and jackets

Hats, scarves and gloves

Sweaters and warm socks

Boots and other winter essentials

HOW TO DONATE:

If you would like to donate clothing/items or you are a business or organisation who could support the students' appeal, please contact [email protected]

A big thank you to Border Force Officer Kev Cusack, who delivered an inspiring session as the latest Guest Speaker to visit our Level 2 Uniformed Public Services students.

Kev gave students a behind-the-scenes look at life in Border Force, covering everything from immigration procedures and legal powers to seized goods and specialist roles, including Fi****ms Officers.

The session linked directly to units being studied this year, helping learners develop their understanding of law and legislation, immigration, public service careers and the roles and responsibilities of specialist agencies.

Hearing first-hand experiences enabled students to connect classroom learning to real-world public service operations.

Students also gained a valuable understanding of the skills, qualities and training required for a career in Border Force, as well as practical advice on how they can start developing these skills today.

Thanks again, Kev, for an informative and engaging insight into this exciting career pathway and for helping bring our curriculum to life through real-world examples.

Our Student Union put on a great stand and activity for our students and staff this week to mark Black History Month!

The stall featured a spinning wheel where participants could connect the name of an inspiring black role model to their photograph with the chance to win a sweet treat!

We love welcoming our former students back onto Campus to share their insights and inspiring stories, so a huge thank you to Jake Broomhead who, just months after excelling on our Access to Higher Education in Health Services Professions course, returned to his old classroom having progressed on to York St John University, where he is studying Paramedic Practice.

Jake spoke candidly about his journey through the Access programme, offering reassurance and practical advice to students currently navigating their first assessments, developing their academic writing skills and preparing for HE.

He gave pertinent guidance on managing workload, building confidence and adapting to university expectations.

Alongside sharing his own experiences, Jake introduced students to educational tools that he found helpful during his studies, while the class also enjoyed the opportunity to ask him questions about university life, the UCAS process, assessment expectations and the realities of transitioning into HE.

His honest reflections and encouragement helped reassure learners that feeling nervous about initial assessments is entirely normal and that perseverance, organisation and seeking support are key to success.

The group also discussed the value of developing links with York St John, particularly around raising awareness of HE opportunities, interview preparation, additional learning support, extra funding availability and building confidence for progression.

Thanks again, Jake, for taking the time to return and inspire the next cohort of future health and social care professionals.
