Not only did outstanding York College apprentice Georgina Richardson complete her Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician qualification eight months ahead of schedule, she also “broke down gender stereotypes” in the process.

Despite initially expressing outdated reservations about taking Georgina on, her employer John Ellis, of Mike Wilson Motors, now admits he would have 10 more like her on his workforce if he could!

Georgina’s talent and emergence as a role model and inspiration for other young women wanting to make their mark in the motor vehicle industry was recognised at the 2026 York College REACH Awards when, from a field of more than 7,000 students and apprentices, she was presented with the prestigious Principal’s Prize.

Still only 20, Georgina also secured her HGV licence during her apprenticeship and won races as a grasstrack motorbike competitor and sidecar passenger.

It's official! York College & University Centre are among the UK's top five training providers for bricklaying and plumbing and heating technician apprenticeships.

According to statistics published by Find A Training Provider, based on 2024/25 data, our bricklaying provision is the third best in the country and our plumbing and heating technician results are the fifth best.

A big well done to all involved!

We now have our own record label at York College!

54 Records has been launched on SoundCloud and will be a platform for our Music Performance & Production students to showcase their talents on.

Daisy Summers has the honour of releasing the first single on 54 Records with her brilliant pop-punk song Hearts On My Shoes.

Congratulations to our Construction Team Leader Jack Wilson, who has been shortlisted for a The Press in York Community Pride award.

Jack has been nominated in the Education Hero of the Year category in recognition of his previous role at College as a Progress Coach.

His nominee said: “Jack understands the challenges many learners face and works tirelessly to build confidence, improve attendance and promote positive attitudes towards learning and future employment.

“His approachable nature and strong communication skills allow students to feel valued and respected, creating a supportive environment where they can thrive.”

Jack will now attend the award ceremony on September 10 at York Races.

Congratulations Azaan Iyer!

Azaan has secured a place to study Law at Leeds Trinity University three-and-a-half years after enrolling at York College as a Level 1 Sport student following his family's move from India.

Now 20, Azaan gained A grades in his Law and Psychology A Levels and a B in Business and also combined his studies with captaining our basketball team.

Big congratulations to Katharine Dent-Jones - our Director of Curriculum for Further & Adult Education - who has been awarded the FIRST-EVER licentiateship from the Chartered Institution For Further Education.

The landmark award has been made to Katharine in recognition of her leadership and teaching experience.

She was also commended on her Education Leadership doctoral research, along with her support for youth work and post-16 transition via her governance role at a local education and employment charity.

Katharine was presented with her licentiateship by Lord Lingfield at the Society of Apothecaries Hall in London.

York College Deputy Principal and Chief Executive Joy Kettyle was also granted CIFE membership at the ceremony.

York College are proud to announce that we have become the UK's first education organisation to offer its sports team and elite athlete students free ECG heart screening tests, using new technology provided by CardioLogic Diagnostics.

The importance of such checks was sadly highlighted once again at the weekend when former York City FC footballer Quevin Castro collapsed on the pitch and died during a game in Portugal despite efforts to revive him using a defibrillator.

Quevin was only 25 and we would like to send our condolences to all of his family and friends, while providing our sport students with the opportunity to undergo a simple, but potentially life-saving, procedure that can identify any previously-undetected, underlying heart conditions.
