On November 20, the San Diego State University–Georgia Advisory Board meeting was held, bringing together the Minister and Deputy Ministers of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, leadership from San Diego State University, a representative of the U.S. Embassy, partner universities, and private-sector stakeholders.

The Advisory Board meets twice a year to review academic progress and internationalisation efforts made by the University.

The meeting opened with welcoming remarks from President Adela de la Torre, Minister Givi Mikanadze, and U.S. Embassy representative Harvey Sernovitz. Presentations were delivered by Ian Gibson, Dean of the Global Campus, and Halil Guven, Dean Emeritus of SDSU-Georgia, followed by an engaging discussion among participants.

The Minister concluded the meeting by highlighting the potential for future cooperation within the framework of ongoing higher education reforms.

Nino Chkhartishvili is a Bachelor of Science graduate in Civil Engineering from San Diego State University Georgia. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she continued her academic pursuits in the master’s program in Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Helsinki.
Recently, she was honored to present her master’s thesis findings at the Young Researchers Seminar organized by leading European transport research institutes.

During her master’s degree studies, she started an internship at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland in the Transport Systems team. After completing her thesis in collaboration with the research centre, she began working as a Research Scientist at VTT. In addition to her role as a researcher, she participated in teaching activities at the University of Helsinki.

In 2025, owing to her influential experience in both Georgian and international projects, she was chosen as a „Remarkable Young Voice in Transport“. The nomination was organised by the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative and Women Mobilize Women. Worldwide, 30 inspiring leaders under-30 were chosen „who are reshaping the future of sustainable and inclusive mobility“.

Nino seeks to leverage her knowledge and experience to enhance Georgian cities and inspire future students to pursue careers in challenging and essential fields, such as science and engineering.

SDSU was represented at the panel discussion on “Internationalizing Georgia’s Education System”, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Georgia on May 27, 2025.

Dr. Hala Madanat, Vice President for Research and Innovation at San Diego State University, joined the President of the Georgian American University and other distinguished leaders to share insights on expanding global engagement in higher education.

We are proud to be part of these important conversations and grateful to our partners for their continued collaboration in shaping the future of international education in Georgia.

Last week, SDSU-Georgia had the honor of hosting a high-level delegation from San Diego State University, including: President Adela de la Torre, Provost William Tong, Vice President for Research and Innovation Hala Madanat and Managing Director of the Wendy Gillespie Center for Advancing Global Business Heidi Knuff.

The delegation's visit to Georgia included participation in the SDSU-Georgia Board of Advisors meeting and the Conference on Internationalization of Higher Education in Georgia.

During their stay, SDSU senior leadership engaged with current students and alumni, reinforcing the university's commitment to international collaboration and student success.

For the Joint Job Fair 2025, SDSU Georgia in partnership with GTU, ISU, and TSU, was proud to bring together leading companies and talented students from ABET-accredited programs.

We are immensely grateful to all the participating employers whose presence made this event possible, and to the students who came prepared to connect, learn, and take the next step in their careers.

Before the start of the fair, opening remarks were delivered by the Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia Tamar Ghvamichava, ABET accreditation expert Joe Turner, AmCham President and SDSU-G Advisory Board Member Irakli Baidashvili, as well as representatives from our partner universities: Vice President of Georgian Technical University Tamar Tsereteli, Head of Student Services and Career Development at Tbilisi State University Giorgi Grigolashvili, and Nikoloz Kvaratskhelia, Head of the Department of Student Affairs at Ilia State University.

We truly appreciate everyone's involvement and look forward to staying connected.

SDSU is thrilled to announce a significant milestone in university’s history: San Diego State University has officially been classified as an R1 research institution, the highest distinction given to doctoral universities in the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. This prestigious designation is only granted to doctoral degree-granting universities that meet specific criteria demonstrating "Very High Spending and Doctoral Production." This is not something for which we can apply, or that we can independently self-identify.

Announced tonight by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education (ACE), SDSU is now among only 187 R1 institutions – less than 5% of the 3,941 institutions classified. We are also among an even smaller number of institutions that not only excel in teaching and research, but also hold designations as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution. Only 15 R1 institutions are also an HSI and a Minority Serving Institution, which includes AANAPISIs.
