University Of Cape Coast (UCC) Welcome to the official page of University of Cape Coast (THE UNIVERSITY OF COMPETITIVE CHOICE).
(2)

The University was established out of a dire need for highly qualified and skilled manpower in education to provide leadership and enlightenment. Its original mandate was therefore to train graduate professional teachers for Ghana's second cycle institutions and the Ministry of Education, in order to meet the manpower needs of the country's accelerated education programme at the time. Today, with the expansion of some of its faculties and the diversification of programmes, the University has the capacity to meet the manpower needs of other ministries and industries in the country, besides that of the Ministry of Education.

The School of Medical Sciences (SMS) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has held its 17th White Coat Ceremony with a call on 159 medical students to uphold compassion, excellence, innovation and service as they begin the clinical phase of their medical education.

Held under the theme, “Beyond the White Coat: A Promise to Ghana and Her People,” the ceremony marked the transition of the students from pre-medical training to clinical education, where they will apply their knowledge and skills in caring for patients on the wards and in the operating theatres.

The students, who had successfully completed their pre-medical training, were robed in white coats and presented with stethoscopes to symbolise their entry into clinical medicine.

Stakeholders from government, academia, industry, finance, environmental regulation and development institutions have called for stronger coordination among policymakers, financial institutions, researchers and industry players to help Ghanaian circular enterprises transition from promising ideas to commercially sustainable businesses.

The call was made at a side event organised by the Ghana Circular Economy Centre (GCEC) as part of the 14th Universities, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development (UEED) in Africa Conference 2026, held at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Held under the theme, “Policy as a Catalyst for Circular Enterprise Growth and Sustainability,” the event brought together policymakers, entrepreneurs, researchers, financial institutions and other stakeholders to discuss ways of creating an enabling environment for circular enterprises to grow and contribute to sustainable development.

The Ghana Science Association (GSA), in collaboration with the Africa Ocean Institute, has held its 20th Biennial Workshop under the theme, “Advancing Ghana’s Blue Economy: Securing Our Shores; Feeding Our Future.”

The day’s event brought together participants from non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations, ministries, departments and agencies, academia, and other stakeholders in the Blue Economy.

Among the objectives of the workshop was to afford participants the opportunity to deliberate on the future of Ghana’s Blue Economy.

Some participants who were unable to attend in person contributed virtually, ensuring the workshop remained interactive and engaging.

In a speech read for her by the Coordinator of the Blue Economy Secretariat, Mr Fred Antwi, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Minister, Madam Emelia Arthur, urged the GSA and the academic community to collaborate with the Ministry to advance practical, research-based measures to protect Ghana’s marine resources and secure livelihood.

The School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has secured an additional US$25,000 grant from Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) to support the next phase of its flagship community eye care initiative, the Optometric Service and Community Outreach for Practical Experience (OPTO-SCOPE) project.

The new funding follows the successful implementation of an earlier US$25,000 OGS grant awarded to the School in 2025.

The initial grant supported the delivery of monthly eye-care outreach services in two communities with Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, bringing essential eye-health services closer to underserved populations and reducing barriers to accessing specialised care.
