Our journey through Bulgaria was an unforgettable geological and cultural experience! 🌍
From the Srednogorie to the Rhodope zone, we explored some of the country’s most significant mining regions and geological landmarks.

🔹 Chelopech Mine (DPM Metals) – We learned about high-sulfidation deposits, resource estimation, and exploration strategies, while getting hands-on experience with drill cores and mineral samples.

🔹 Ellatzite Mine (Ellatzite-Med) – A fascinating visit to one of Bulgaria’s major porphyry Cu-Au systems, where we discussed geology, mineralization, and mine operations with the company’s geologists. We also had the amazing opportunity to visit the open pit mine.

🔹 Srednogorie Field Visits – We visited abandoned mines, examining different alteration assemblages and discussing environmental impacts and rehabilitation, guided by Boris Krestev from the Sofia SEG SC.

🔹 Lecture at the Sofia University: Invited by the Sofia SEG SC we attended a lecture from Desislav Ivanov and Tim Ireland, and had the chance to network with Sofia SEG SC afterwards.

🔹 Earth and Man Museum – An inspiring encounter with one of the world’s largest mineral collections, showcasing Bulgaria’s rich geological history.

🔹 Panagyurishte Treasure & Madan Area – We explored the connection between Bulgaria’s ancient gold artifacts and modern mining heritage, ending our trip surrounded by stunning mineral specimens and welcoming local guides.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) for their generous sponsorship and continuous support in providing students with hands-on learning opportunities. 🙏

A huge thank you to all the companies, professionals, and staff from DPM Metals, Ellatzite-Med, the Madan museums, and the Sofia SEG SC who welcomed us so warmly, shared their expertise, and made this trip truly enriching and inspiring. 💎

We had the honor of hosting Juan Carlos Castelli at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, SEG Regional Vice President for 2025 and indepedent consultant geologist. With nearly 40 years of experience in multiscale geology, the inspiring Workshop started with four geology and exploration lectures on Friday, October 10th.

The event continued with an exciting field trip in Thrace over the weekend (Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th) focusing on gathering of geological data, followed by an interpretation and discussion session on Monday 13th, providing us with real-time solutions.

A huge thank you to Mr. Castelli for sharing his invaluable knowledge and giving us such a unique and enriching experience, and SEG for sponsoring the event through the lecturers program! 🌍🪨
