Summer Session I is officially underway!

Many of our students spent their first week abroad exploring Athens’ iconic sites, and are now heading to islands and other scenic destinations.

CYA offers two four-week sessions each summer, turning all of Greece into a classroom. These intensive courses provide unique, hands-on learning experiences in subjects ranging from archaeological excavations and history to religion and biology.

Members of our team spent the week at the NAFSA Association of International Educators 2026 Annual Conference in Orlando, engaging with the theme “Global by Design.” We connected with partners, both new and established, and explored collaborations that will shape the future of our programs.

CYA has navigated changes in Greece’s educational landscape for more than 60 years to deliver transformative study abroad experiences for students – we welcome its continuing evolution. 🇬🇷

What does summer in Greece look like? ☀️

For our incoming students, it looks like long seminar tables, ferry rides between islands, morning lectures that turn into afternoon conversations, and learning that comes alive under the Mediterranean sun.

Here in Athens, we’re busy preparing for another packed season of summer sessions: four-week intensive courses where academics meet movement, place, and experience.

In addition to her coursework, she interns at Evangelismos Hospital, where she observes physiotherapists to see how care adapts to every unique patient and situation. Under Dr. Papadopoulos’ mentorship, she’s building her PT school resume while experiencing healthcare in a new cultural context.

Do you have what it takes to compete like an ancient Olympian? 👟

Students in Prof. Karavas’ course, “Sports, Games and Spectacles in the Graeco-Roman World,” visited the birthplace of the modern Olympics to try their hand at the ancient long jump, one of five Pentathlon events.

Through both primary source analysis and site visits, this course investigates how athletic contests and spectacles functioned as the heart of social, religious, and political life in the ancient world.

Sydney (St. Olaf College) is spending her afternoons and weekends interning at We Need Books, a multilingual library and community hub! 📚

From cataloging books on quiet mornings to hosting events and workshops on busy weekends, Sydney is learning what it takes to sustain a thriving third space while gaining new perspectives on social connection and belonging.

“Since interning here and living in Greece, I’ve learned that communal culture is so much better,” she reflects. “In ancient literature like the Odyssey, they talk about ‘stranger love,’ which is being kind to strangers regardless of who they are. That concept pops into my head while I’m working here. You’re just existing in community, and that’s important to foster.”

Based out of our Academic Center in Athens, the Academic Director has a central role in maintaining our high academic standards and shaping a curriculum that defines our hands-on, cross-cultural learning experience.

Qualified candidates should possess a strong background in higher education administration, an advanced degree (PhD preferred), and excellent command of both Greek and English language.

Our annual Student Conference took place Tuesday, where students presented original research around the theme “Re-Imagining Greece: Images, Representation, and Meaning.”

The presentations explored diverse subjects such as ancient marriage and masculinity, Byzantine influences, retellings of Greek myths, and modern digital tourism. Each session investigated how Greece has been depicted, exported, and reimagined across time through the lenses of reclaiming antiquity and reperforming “Greekness.”

When asked to consider questions of authenticity, power, and cultural identity, we come to understand Greece not as a fixed historical subject, but as an ongoing conversation between past and present.
