Happy new academic year! 🌿
For most of us in Laboratory of Ecology - EcoLab BET, autumn marks a turning point in everything we study: the end of one season, and at the same time, the beginning of the next! We love sharing the things we are passionate about, so in this poster series you can discover 24+1 reasons why we happily lose track of time in the meadows of the UoI Campus (and beyond!) every spring. 🌷

Για εμάς στο Laboratory of Ecology - EcoLab BET, το φθινόπωρο είναι κομβικό σημείο για αυτά που μελετάμε: το τέλος μιας σεζόν και παράλληλα η αρχή της επόμενης! 🆕 New publication from our *one and only* lab head, Prof. John Halley, in the Journal of Mathematical Biology! 🎉

ℹ️ The paper explores an important question that gained renewed attention during the COVID-19 pandemic: how can epidemics grow faster than exponentially? 📈🦠

🔎 *What did he find?* | By extending the classical SIR model to incorporate the emergence of increasingly transmissible variants, the study demonstrates that hyper-exponential growth can arise naturally from evolutionary processes. It also derives explicit mathematical expressions describing when this behaviour emerges, how it eventually collapses as susceptible individuals are depleted, and why stochasticity plays such a crucial role.

💡*What more?* | Beyond infectious diseases, these findings may have broader implications for understanding rapidly evolving biological and societal systems, from cancer evolution to technological innovation. [aka “How cool is that? 😎]

Prof. John M. Halley head of our lab is back from spreading the message in Shantou, China, at the 24th Pacific Science Congress 20-24 November (https://psc2025.stu.edu.cn/home). He gave an invited lecture entitled "The Dynamics of Biodiversity in Response to Human Impact" at the session "Biodiversity and Ecosystems". It was a great conference with lots of high-quality presentations, both in the Plenary and in John's session!

🆕Freshly out of the publishing oven🥳!
ℹ There has been a general belief that orchids are showing a decline in our times; however and if so, what is the magnitude and the significance of this decline? Have orchid distributions shifted over time and are there any particular trends in terms of change in known orchid-rich areas?
💻 To address these questions we analysed a brilliant orchid dataset spanning in 90 years, from the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland, looking for trends in occupancy for each orchid species present in Britain and Ireland, including 1/f noise, as well as for patterns of change in orchid distributions and orchid-rich areas.

Nature: the quintessential element of existence! From minuscule molecules to vast biomes, every aspect of our surrounding world exists, interacts, and flourishes in an everlasting cycle. On this we celebrate the world we live in; we embrace its wild nature, we respect its existence, and we work towards the protection and conservation of biodiversity, especially now, in the Anthropocene, where balance is fragile under the effects of global change. At Τμήμα Βιολογικών Εφαρμογών & Τεχνολογιών (Πανεπιστήμιο Ιωαννίνων), the elective course “ (ΒΕΕ814)” does exactly this; trains the future ecologists to respect, observe, study, and protect biodiversity and the environment! We are extremely lucky to be surrounded by one of the most diverse, pristine, and wild areas in , Epirus – and this diverse mosaic of ecosystems is the place where our Field Station PALASE is located & our students learn how to be a part of nature. Τι θα ήταν η #Οικολογία χωρίς το πεδίο; 🌷🌳🦋🐦‍⬛🦎🐍🐸🐝🪲🐭🐺🐻
Στο πλαίσιο του μαθήματος επιλογής «Οικολογία Πεδίου (ΒΕΕ814)» (course coordinator: our very own Dr. Martha Charitonidou ✌️) που παρέχεται στο 8ο εξάμηνο του προγράμματος σπουδών από το Τμήμα Βιολογικών Εφαρμογών & Τεχνολογιών, οι φοιτήτριες και οι φοιτητές μας είχαν την ευκαιρία αυτή την εβδομάδα να μάθουν μέσα από διαδραστική άσκηση πεδίου, μεθόδους δειγματοληψίας και καταγραφής Λεπιδόπτερων και Ορνιθοπανίδας από την καθηγήτρια του τμήματος Βασιλική Κατή (Kiki Kati / BCL-Biodiversity Conservation Lab/Greece). Ξεκινώντας νωρίς το πρωί στην Πανεπιστημιούπολη, έμαθαν πώς να αναγνωρίζουν και να καταγράφουν είδη πουλιών μέσω ήχων και παρατήρησης, καθώς επίσης πώς να καταγράφουν και να ταυτοποιούν πεταλούδες, χρησιμοποιώντας κατάλληλα πρωτόκολλα και εργαλεία (ψηφιακά και μη). Έπεται συνέχεια με άλλες ομάδες οργανισμών!
Εμείς είμαστε σίγουρα ενθουσιασμένοι! Εσείς; 😀
