👩🏻‍🔬Dr. Olalla López-Costas PI of ERC PollutedPast is guest researcher with a fellowship José Castillejo from the Spanish Research Council. 🇪🇸

The primary goal of her visit is to join together both ERC and understand past metal pollution in Thessaloniki. ⚗️

Dr. Olalla López-Costas is a physical anthropologist and archaeologist based at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, where she teaches in both the History BA and the Archaeology & Antiquity Sciences MSc programs. She leads the EcoPast research group (GI-1553) and explores how culture and environment shaped past human lives — through diet, health, pollution, and activity. Her work dives deep into archaeological human remains, using innovative methods in paleopathology, anthropometry, and geochemistry (including stable isotopes and elemental analysis). She also applies archaeometric techniques to study soils, pottery, and natural archives like peatlands and lakes. 🧬🦴

👩🏻‍🔬 Η Dr. Olalla López-Costas είναι επικεφαλής του ERC PollutedPast και φιλοξενούμενη ερευνήτρια στο εργαστήριό μας μέσω της υποτροφίας José Castillejo του Ισπανικού Ερευνητικού Συμβουλίου 🇪🇸

Η επίσκεψή της έχει στόχο τη σύνδεση των δύο ERC έργων και τη μελέτη της μεταλλικής ρύπανσης στο παρελθόν της Θεσσαλονίκης 🏛️⚗️

Η Dr. López-Costas είναι φυσική ανθρωπολόγος και αρχαιολόγος στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Santiago de Compostela, επικεφαλής της ερευνητικής ομάδας EcoPast. Μελετά πώς ο πολιτισμός και το περιβάλλον επηρέασαν τη διατροφή, την υγεία, τη ρύπανση και τη δραστηριότητα των ανθρώπινων πληθυσμών στο παρελθόν. Το έργο της εστιάζει στη μελέτη του ανθρώπινου σκελετικού υλικού, με καινοτόμες μεθόδους παλαιοπαθολογίας, ανθρωπομετρίας και γεωχημείας (σταθερά ισότοπα και στοιχειακή ανάλυση). Χρησιμοποιεί επίσης αρχαιομετρικές τεχνικές για τη μελέτη εδαφών, κεραμικής και φυσικών αρχείων, όπως τύρφες και λίμνες.🧬🦴

Είμαστε πολύ χαρούμενοι που προσθέσαμε στη συλλογή των ψηφιακού εξοπλισμού μας το Artec Micro II — ένα ισχυρό επιτραπέζιο 3D σκάνερ, που έρχεται να συμπληρώσει το φορητό Artec Spider.

🗣️Last week our lab had the pleasure of welcoming distinguished visitors from the Chinese School of Classical Studies at Athens❕

We were delighted to host Professor Li, Director of the School, Dr. Yufeng Sun.During their visit, we offered a tour of our laboratory facilities and engaged in meaningful discussions about our ongoing research and shared academic interests.
👥🔗It was a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen international scholarly connections!

We especially thank Dr. Marina Tasaklaki from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Rhodopi who guided us through the archaeological Museum of Komotini and the archaeological site of Abdera 🏛️

🗣️Την περασμένη εβδομάδα το εργαστήριό μας είχε τη χαρά να υποδεχτεί διακεκριμένους επισκέπτες από την Κινεζική Σχολή Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Αθήνα❕

Με χαρά φιλοξενήσαμε τον καθηγητή Λι, Διευθυντή της Σχολής, τον Δρ. Yufeng Sun. Κατά τη διάρκεια της επίσκεψής τους, προσφέραμε μια ξενάγηση στις εγκαταστάσεις του εργαστηρίου μας και πραγματοποιήσαμε ουσιαστικές συζητήσεις σχετικά με τη έρευνά μας και τα κοινά ακαδημαϊκά ενδιαφέροντά μας🔬

👥🔗 Ήταν μια θαυμάσια ευκαιρία να ανταλλάξουμε ιδέες και να ενισχύσουμε τους διεθνείς ακαδημαϊκούς μας δεσμούς!
