"My experience through the Erasmus programme gave me the opportunity to complete a three-month clinical traineeship at Hospital Universitari Doctor Josep Trueta in Girona, Catalonia, an experience that became one of the most important chapters of my academic, professional, and personal journey as a nursing student.
My clinical placement took place for one and a half months in a semi-critical care unit (UPIC) and for one and a half months in the Coronary Critical Care Unit (UCO), within a highly demanding and fast-paced clinical environment. During this period, I had to adapt to a different healthcare system, new clinical protocols, advanced technologies, different working methods, and a completely different linguistic and communication setting, which was one of the greatest challenges of this experience.
Through the daily care of critically ill and high-dependency patients, I was trained in specialized nursing procedures and gained valuable hands-on clinical experience. I actively participated in patient monitoring, vital signs assessment, medication preparation and administration, as well as the management of central venous catheters and critical intravenous therapies, with particular emphasis on the safe and appropriate use of each venous access line. In addition, I was trained in the use of advanced monitoring systems and medical equipment, adapting to technological tools and software within a Catalan-speaking healthcare environment.
Despite communication barriers, the nursing staff guided me with professionalism, patience, and genuine willingness to teach. They helped me understand not only how each procedure is performed, but also the clinical reasoning and pathophysiology behind every intervention. Through this collaboration, I learned to work with greater autonomy, responsibility, concentration, and clinical judgment, while contributing meaningfully to patient care as part of the nursing team.
Above all, this experience strengthened my passion for nursing and deepened my understanding of the true meaning of care. I return with greater knowledge, stronger clinical skills, increased confidence, and a much deeper appreciation of the responsibility, humanity, and dedication required in the nursing profession."
