Το Σουηδικό Ινστιτούτο Αθήνας θα πραγματοποιήσει την Τετάρτη 20 Μαρτίου 2019 ημερίδα με θέμα την αρχαία πολεοδομία στην δυτική Θεσσαλία. Ορισμένες από τις ομιλίες θα αναφερθούν και στο ΜALP.

The Swedish Institute at Athens would like to invite you to a workshop about Ancient Urbanism in Western Thessaly, at the Institute (Mitseon 9), March 20, 10.00-14.00.

The organizer writes: "The archaeology of Western Thessaly has long found itself in the shade of the more well-known sites of the eastern half of the region. However, more recent work in the peripheral units of Karditsa and Trikala has highlighted the wealth of archaeological sites here, with numerous large and important ancient cities scattered on an around the plain. Many of these urban sites has only recently been studied, with several still awaiting systematic investigation.

The workshop will address the challenges of examining ancient cities in Western Thessaly on a full-site level, using the Greek-Swedish project at Vlochos as a case study. Questions relating to method development and application, scale, and resolution will be discussed, and will surely be of interest even beyond the bounds of Thessaly."

Τμήμα του οχυρωματικού περιβόλου στο λόφο του Προφήτη Ηλία. Η οχύρωση είναι δομημένη με την έμπλεκτο τεχνική από τοπικό φαιοκάστανο λίθο και αποτελείται από δύο παράλληλα σκέλη κτισμένα κατά το ακανόνιστο ορθογώνιο ή ισόδομο τραπεζιόσχημο σύστημα. Το ορατό ύψος του τείχους κατά τόπους ανέρχεται στα 2μ. και το πλάτος φθάνει τα 1,60μ περίπου. Ο περίβολος έχει περίμετρο 1340 μ. περίπου και διαθέτει 13 ορθογώνιους πύργους σε τακτά διαστήματα, οι οποίοι προεξέχουν της οχυρωματικής γραμμής. Από τον τρόπο δόμησης του τείχους της ακροπόλεως και βάσει ανάλογων οχυρώσεων στην περιοχή, αλλά και όπως απέδειξε η πρόσφατη επιφανειακή έρευνα, αυτό εντάσσεται σε μια σειρά οχυρωματικών έργων που κατασκευάστηκαν στα τέλη του 4ου - αρχές 3ου αι. π.Χ. για την κατόπτευση της κοιλάδας του Σπερχειού και των περασμάτων της οροσειράς της ΄Οθρυος μέσω των οποίων συνδέεται με την Θεσσαλία
