🏛️ Today the students of the course in Material Culture and Archaeometry at Roma Tre University, coordinated by Rossana Valente, visited the National Etruscan Museum of Rocca Albornoz in Viterbo for a field-based class dedicated to museum management, cultural heritage valorisation, public archaeology, and community outreach.

We would like to warmly thank Dr Sara De Angelis, Director of the museum, and dr Romina Laurito, Coordinator of Educational Services and Training for the Direzione Regionale Musei Nazionali Lazio, for welcoming our students and guiding us through such a stimulating and insightful experience.

📚 The visit offered an important opportunity for the students to engage directly with current approaches to museum practice, heritage communication, and public engagement, highlighting the central role of museums as spaces of research, education, accessibility, and dialogue with local communities.

🔬 A special visit to the Department of Geological Sciences at Roma Tre University for the students of the course Material Culture and Archaeometry, lead by Dr. Rossana Valente.

Students explored the Experimental Volcanology and Petrology Laboratories under the guidance of Prof. Claudia Romano.

🏺 The laboratories are also used for the scientific analysis of materials from ongoing landscape archaeology field projects, offering a direct perspective on how archaeometry supports active archaeological research.

🌍 An important opportunity to connect the study of material culture with scientific methods, laboratory practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

🌍 The Journey Continues!

The students of the Master's degree in Field Archaeology in Greece have been actively engaged in enriching educational activities. They recently visited and worked on the exhibition "Greece in Rome," thanks to Professor Alexia Latini. Additionally, they explored the cultural sustainability of the Republican Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia in Palestrina, guided by Dr. Sabina Addamiano and Dr. Diana Raiano. This experience deepened their understanding of ancient cultures and their influences.

A special day with the students of our Joint Master Program in Field Archaeology in Greece currently enrolled at Roma Tre University.

From the Imperial Fora to the Museo Barracco, we walked through the ancient heart of Rome, reading monuments and spaces as a living stratification of history, in direct engagement with what these students study every day.

The visit to the Museo Barracco, guided by Prof. Silvia Festuccia and Dr Alessandro Di Ludovico, also provided an opportunity to reflect on the deep connections between the Greek world and Rome within a broader Mediterranean context, through artistic traditions, the circulation of models and wider cultural exchanges.

This week, our students had the opportunity to attend a workshop led by Roman pottery specialist Dr. Apostolos Garyfallopoulos, as part of the course "Archaeological Excavation" taught by Jamie Donati.

Using pottery from the Educational Archaeological Collection of the Department of History, Archaeology and Social Anthropology at the University of Thessaly, students examined examples ranging from prehistoric to historical ceramics and became familiar with key analytical methods, from typology and dating techniques to pottery fabric analysis.

From 13 to 16 November, our Joint Master’s Programme, together with the second MA programme in Archaeology at the University of Thessaly, set off on an exciting educational trip across Athens, Euboea, and Boeotia.

From the Acropolis Museum and the Athenian Agora to Amarynthos, Eretria, Lefkandi, and Thebes, students explored iconic archaeological landscapes and engaged directly with cutting-edge research in the field.

A heartfelt thank-you to the expert archaeologists who welcomed us, guided us, and shared their expertise:
Angeliki Kouveli and Irene Karra (Acropolis Museum),
Maria Ntourou (Ephorate of the City of Athens),
Aspa Eustathiou and Bruce Hartzler (American School of Classical Studies at Athens),
and Samuel Verdan (Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece).
Their tours and discussions made this trip unforgettable for our students!

Here are just a few highlights from these inspiring days.
