🌟 Meet our Li Ka Shing Prizes winner, Dr. Jing Ling 👩🏻‍🎓

What happens when clouds or storms block satellite images of our cities? Dr Jing Ling’s research helps solve this problem by combining regular satellite images with radar data that can “see” through clouds. Her work makes urban mapping more reliable, even in difficult weather.

Her work makes satellite monitoring more dependable for real-world needs, such as:
🏙️ improving urban planning 🌧️ monitoring cities in difficult weather conditions 🚨 supporting disaster response and emergency management 🗺️ providing clearer information for local decision-making

This can support smarter city planning, better urban management, and faster disaster response when accurate information is most needed.

Dr Ling has published widely in international journals and conferences and received several academic awards, including the AAG 2024 Annual Meeting Student Competition Best Paper Award. She is currently an Associate Professor at Guangdong University of Technology, where she continues to apply advanced satellite technologies to real-world city and emergency needs.

🎉 HKU Shines at the 12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition!

A total of 18 HKU research postgraduate students achieved outstanding success at the 12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Highlights include PhD candidates Zitong Shao, Jiahui Deng, and Yinjie Zhou from the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, who took home the Grand Prize for their innovative project, “Nose-to-Brain NanoPowder Nasal Spray for Rapid Ischemic Stroke Rescue.”

Additionally, PhD candidates Alex To and Chloe Kan from the School of Biomedical Sciences, along with their team, secured the First Prize for “Next Generation Precision Medicine Platform Integrating AI Drug Discovery and Ex Vivo Organoid Validation.”
HKU showcased innovation across diverse fields including biomedical, AI, sustainable engineering, and healthcare fields, reaffirming our commitment to empowering student creativity and societal impact. Proud of our talented students and their remarkable achievements!

A huge welcome to our HKU Summer Research Programme 2026 participants!

The Orientation and Opening Ceremony on June 16 at Rayson Huang Theatre brought together our fellow SRP participants from around the world to mark the beginning of an intensive summer of research and academic exchange.

Participants were introduced to the programme structure, research expectations and support resources at HKU, and were inspired by enlightening speeches on how they can make an impact to the world.

In the coming weeks, SRP 2026 students will engage in hands-on research projects, further develop their academic and professional skills, and experience HKU’s vibrant intellectual community, complemented by a series of social, cultural and networking activities.

We look forward to witnessing the progress and achievements of our SRP 2026 cohort! 💪🏻

Eleventh in the world, two years in a row! 🌍🏆

Meet Li Ka Shing Prizes winner, Dr. Jixiang Jing, whose research shows that diamonds are not just for jewellery – they can also power the technologies of the future. ✨

In his PhD work at HKU, Dr. Jing explored how tiny diamond structures can be built directly onto small computer chips to create ultra-sensitive sensors. These chips can shine light and pick it up again, allowing them to sense very small changes in their surroundings. This could one day help measure pressure with great accuracy. 💎

A key part of his work was finding effective ways to handle diamond in new forms. He developed methods to peel off diamond into extremely thin, flexible layers that can cover large surfaces, and to place tiny diamond particles neatly across a chip in carefully designed patterns. These advances make it much easier to build future devices that use diamond for fast, reliable sensing and communication. 🔬

Dr. Jing is now a Post-doctoral Fellow in Professor Zhiqin Chu’s team at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, HKU, which he continues to push the limits of diamond-based technology.

🎉 Congratulations to Vinci Cheung, a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography, for being awarded the CGSG Student Travel Award and the first runner-up position in the prestigious Best Student Paper Award competition at the 2026 American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting! 🏆

Vinci’s paper, “‘Digital divide or digital dividend?’ The growth of a digital economy and changes in urban-rural inequality in China,” offers nuanced insights into the complex relationship between digital transformation and inequality, challenging simplified narratives and providing valuable guidance for policymakers striving for inclusive urban-rural development. Her work highlights that the benefits of digital growth are not universal and emphasises the importance of context in understanding socio-economic changes.

“I am truly honoured to receive this recognition,” Vinci shares. “In our rapidly digitalising world, understanding who benefits—and who is left behind—has never been more urgent. I am excited to continue this work as there is so much more to understand.”

Professor Geim will share his insights into what makes graphene so special, why it fascinates researchers across disciplines, and how its unique properties are beginning to shape modern technologies.
諾貝爾物理學獎得主、港大物理學系講座教授Professor Sir Andre GEIM爵士 將於2026年6月9日（星期二）舉行首場就職講座。作為石墨烯研究先驅，Professor Geim 將分享石墨烯為何如此獨特、為何備受不同領域研究人員關注，以及其獨特特性如何逐步應用於現代科技之中。
