HKUST and NetDragon Partner to Establish Medical Technology Professorship

HKUST has received a generous donation from NetDragon Websoft Holdings Limited (NetDragon) to establish the “NetDragon Professorship in Medical Technology”, this will support the University's pursuit of research excellence. By integrating academic strengths in engineering and medicine, the Professorship will foster scientific breakthroughs in frontier areas of healthcare and public health, further solidifying HKUST's leadership in interdisciplinary research.

This Professorship will be conferred upon a distinguished scholar from the School of Engineering, recognizing exceptional contributions to the field and supporting ongoing academic and research endeavors. The signing ceremony was held on the HKUST campus. Witnessed by Prof. Nancy IP, President of HKUST, and Dr. LIU Dejian, Chairman and Executive Director of NetDragon, the agreement was signed by Prof. Charles NG, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement of HKUST, and Dr. Simon LEUNG, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of NetDragon.

President Ip expressed her heartfelt gratitude for NetDragon's generous support, stating, "By integrating the cutting-edge technologies of the School of Engineering with the clinical expertise of the School of Medicine, we aim to build a vibrant ecosystem for interdisciplinary innovation. This will further solidify HKUST's position as a global leader in interdisciplinary research.“

🥈 Women's Doubles: 1st Runner-up with partner DOO Hoi Kem

Wing Lam and partner Hoi Kem delivered a spectacular performance in the Women's Doubles Final. They faced off against Japan's Miwa HARIMOTO and Hina HAYATA in a fiercely contested, thrilling match, ultimately securing the silver medal after a hard-fought battle with a final score of 11-6, 9-11, 13-11, 11-9.

To celebrate our 35th anniversary, “The Melody of Eternal Harmony” special concert featured an unforgettable encore of our University Anthem, beautifully delivered by baritone LIU Tao and the Chinese Orchestra of Zhejiang Conservatory of Music (ZJCM).

Hosted at the Shaw Auditorium and conducted by renowned maestros WANG Fujian and ZHOU Zhan, the spectacular evening seamlessly blended traditional heritage with contemporary artistry. The performance also featured an exceptional lineup of internationally acclaimed musicians, including world-renowned p**a virtuoso WU Man, erhu performer ZHANG Yongyin, pianist WU Junlin, and dizi master WEI Sijun.

HKUST Tops Hong Kong Universities with More Than 1,000 HKPFS Recipients

As a global magnet for top-tier talent, HKUST has established a stellar track record under the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). Since the Research Grants Council (RGC) initiated the scheme 17 years ago in 2009, HKUST has welcomed over 1,000 fellowship recipients. Coming from over 50 countries and regions, these elite students account for more than a quarter of all HKPFS fellowship recipients to date, reinforcing HKUST's position as the leading destination for HKPFS awardees among Hong Kong’s University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded universities.

In the 2026/27 academic year starting this September, HKUST welcomes over 100 new HKPFS recipients. Over the next three years, these doctoral students will receive a combined total of more than HK$112 million in fellowships and research allowances from the HKSAR Government. This achievement underscores HKUST's world-class research capabilities and commitment to nurturing talent, while affirming its pivotal role in attracting international research talent, supporting Hong Kong's development into a global hub for high-caliber talent, and advancing the city as an international center for post-secondary education, innovation and technology.

What will it take to transform the low-altitude economy from emerging innovation into a commercially viable and globally connected industry?

Join us at the Future of Low Altitude Economy – An Inter-City Dialogue: Commercialization and Standardization on 10 September 2026 at HKUST, where policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, academics, technology innovators, and international experts will come together to explore the next chapter of low-altitude economic development.

The forum will feature keynote speeches, expert panel discussions, and strategic dialogues focusing on:
🔹 Cross-Sector Collaboration to accelerate the development of the low-altitude ecosystem
🔹 Standardization and Global Connectivity, examining how Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area can contribute to international standards for drones, eVTOLs, air traffic management, telecommunications, and safety systems
🔹 Commercialization Pathways, covering practical applications such as urban air mobility, smart logistics, precision agriculture, infrastructure development, regulatory sandboxes, and cross-border operations

HKUST Hosts "Fire Up Your Year" Orientation Carnival to Welcome the 2026/27 Academic Year

HKUST today held its orientation carnival, "Fire Up Your Year," today (September 1). Coinciding with the University's 35th anniversary, the event themed "Where Miracles Happen," brought together President Prof. Nancy IP, members of the University leadership, faculty, staff, and alumni to warmly welcome more than 8,000 new undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Chinese Mainland, and around the world to the HKUST community as they embark on an exciting new chapter in their academic journey.

President Ip offered words of encouragement to students, saying, “Embrace every opportunity, challenge yourself to grow, and strive to make a meaningful impact on the world around you."

The orientation carnival featured a vibrant array of activities, including live band performances, rope-skipping demonstrations, interactive quiz sessions, and a 35th-anniversary cake-cutting ceremony, bringing together faculty, staff, students, and alumni to celebrate the start of the new academic year. To further enhance the festive atmosphere, HKUST also organized a two-day, campus-wide "Campus Quest" stamp-collecting event featuring interactive game stalls and information stations. Students can collect stamps by completing challenges at designated locations across campus to redeem a variety of commemorative gifts.

As HKUST embarks on a new academic year and celebrates its 35th anniversary, the University remains committed to advancing education, research and innovation. Together with its students, faculty, staff and alumni, HKUST will continue to push boundaries, achieve new milestones, and write the next chapter of excellence and impact.
