[Staff Achievement]

Professor David Parker, Chair Professor in Chemistry at HKBU and an internationally renowned chemist, has been awarded the Paolo Chini Memorial Lecture by the Italian Chemical Society. He was invited to deliver a lecture at the Society's meeting in Turin, Italy, this September.

The award recognises Professor Parker’s fundamental contributions to lanthanide coordination chemistry and the development of advanced molecular probes for bioimaging, sensing and diagnostics.

The Paolo Chini Memorial Lecture was established in memory of the legendary Italian chemist Paolo Chini, a pioneer in the field of metal carbonyl cluster synthesis. This honour is bestowed annually upon a leading scientist who has excelled in organometallic chemistry and in catalysis. Professor Parker is the first scholar from Hong Kong to receive this honour.

Professor Parker's research bridges the fields of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. He is highly acclaimed for pioneering contributions to chiral molecule design and interdisciplinary chemistry. A testament to his distinguished academic achievements, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2002.

Applying or playing with festive fireworks might create a lively atmosphere✨, but how much do we know about their safety and chemical hazards🧪?

In a recent interview on 📺TVB’s programme "A Closer Look (時事多面睇)", Dr. Gray Ho, Associate Head of the Department of Chemistry at Hong Kong Baptist University, unpacked the science and risks associated with fireworks🎇. Dr. Ho explained that while miniature fireworks like sparklers seem relatively small, their reaction temperatures can reach hundreds to over a thousand degrees Celsius, posing serious fire risks if used near flammable materials or indoors. Furthermore, indoor burning produces fine particulate matter and carbon monoxide, which can affect respiratory health and air quality. Even small items like bang snaps 💥contain friction-sensitive energetic materials that require careful handling.

🌟 Recap: UG Programme Orientation & Open Semester Gathering 🌟

Throwback to Sept 10, 2026! Our Chemistry family came together to kick off the new academic year with energy and excitement! 🧪
✨ We started with insightful speeches and a department introduction to prepare everyone for the journey ahead. A huge thanks to Dr. Emmie Ho, Head of Racing Laboratory at The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Mr. Ronald Wong from our alumni association, Baptist Chemists, for sharing their valuable wisdom! 💞

🎮 Then came the hype! A massive well done to our students who hosted an incredible Ice-Breaking game! 🥳 Every team brought their A-game, coming out to play, answer questions, and compete! Congratulation to the winning team! 🔥

Following the exciting ice-breaking game, award presentations, student sharing, plenty of mingling over dinner, and lovely gifts capped off a brilliant night. It was wonderful to see so many new faces connecting!
