September 13, 2026 is World Sepsis Day. The Department of Emergency Medicine at HKUMed has been advancing sepsis care through research.

Prof Timothy Rainer is running multicentre randomised controlled trials to improve appropriate antibiotic use in patients with post-cancer treatment fever and evaluate the roles of steroid in community-acquired respiratory infections.

Prof Rex Lam has completed a pilot trial to evaluate sepsis bundle care that is guided by NEWS2 (an early warning score) and is running another trial to evaluate rapid molecular diagnosis of respiratory infections in the emergency department.

Using large-scale local data from over 15,000 hospital patients with viral sepsis, Prof Abraham Wai has demonstrated that antiviral treatments are linked to lower hospital death rates and shorter hospital stays.

We thank our patient participants and emergency department colleagues for their tremendous contributions to the global effort of fighting sepsis.

📢 Publication Announcement
We are pleased to announce that Professor Esther Chan’s team's from HKU’s Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy has published, "Real-World Effectiveness and Safety of Direct Oral Anticoagulants Versus Warfarin in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Mitral Stenosis: A Target Trial Emulation," in Annals of Internal Medicine — a leading peer-reviewed medical journal distributed to over 163,000 American College of Physicians members and read by clinicians and researchers worldwide. Professor Rainer from the Department of Emergency Medicine was honoured to collaborate in the project and to play a part in its success.

This study employs a target trial emulation framework to generate real-world evidence on anticoagulation strategies for patients with atrial fibrillation and coexisting mitral stenosis, addressing a critical gap in current clinical evidence where randomised trial data remain limited.
The findings contribute meaningfully to informed clinical decision-making and patient safety in cardiovascular medicine.

Professor Abraham Wai, Clinical Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine, has been awarded Fellowship through Distinction from the Faculty of Public Health, UK, in recognition of his work in public health service and research. This honour highlights our department’s growing role in linking emergency care with population health and service improvement.

Over the past years, Professor Wai has helped build an evidence base that informs how health systems prepare for surges, protect vulnerable groups, and redesign emergency services. His research and collaborations have brought our department into closer partnership with colleagues across hospitals, universities, and the wider community.

We are delighted to celebrate this milestone with him. It reflects not only his dedication, but also the shared efforts of our team to improve care at the bedside and at the system level.

We are delighted that the CCCH9057: Shaping Health in China Lunchtime Seminar was a great success, with around 200 participants joining us both in person and online. Through the insightful sharing and engaging discussion, the audience gained valuable perspectives on China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and its implications for the Greater Bay Area and Hong Kong.

Our sincere thanks to Mr. Gordon Lam, Deputy to the National People’s Congress, for his inspiring talk; to Dr. Jack Tsao, Associate Director and Senior Lecturer of the HKU Common Core Office, for his support and presence; and to Professor Abraham Wai for moderating and hosting the seminar.
