Throwback to an incredible night last week! ๐Ÿ“ธโœจ On Sept 3, we officially kicked off the new academic year with our BSc(Surveying) Orientation & UG Research Exhibition Welcoming Reception!

We had the best time welcoming our fresh faces to the REC family and celebrating the brilliant dissertation projects of our graduates. ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ’ก A massive thank you to our incredible Guests of Honour, Sr Tony Wan (HKIS President) and Sr Justin Yu, FRICS (Member, RICS Hong Kong Regional Advisory Board), for joining us and sharing such inspiring words with our students! ๐Ÿ‘

From insightful speeches and industry networking to hearing all about the amazing Tianjin and Sydney Study Tours (and giving out some well-deserved awards! ๐Ÿ†), the energy in the room was unmatched. It was so great to see our students, alumni, faculty, and industry friends mingling and sharing experiences.

Reflecting on a Successful Event!

On September 3, 2026, the Department of Real Estate at HKU had the pleasure of hosting the esteemed Turner & Townsend team, bringing together industry leaders, faculty, and researchers for an inspiring morning of insight and collaboration.

A highlight of the event was the distinguished Turner & Townsend leadership team, led by Mr. Brian Shuptrine, Regional Managing Director, APAC. The team included:

- Mr. Nick Heald, Managing Director, North Asia
- Mr. Colin McBride, Head of Hong Kong and Macau
- Ir Yan Zhou, Director, Energy & Infrastructure, Greater China
- Ms. Amy Ho, Graduate Consultant

The event was officially opened by our Head of Department, Prof. Wilson Lu, with a warm welcome to all attendees. Prof. Fan Xue, Associate Head (Research), gave an introductory presentation about the Department to our guests. We were also happy to have the participation of our faculty members, including: Prof. Lennon Choy, Associate Head (External Liaison), Dr. Tas Yong Koh , Associate Head (Teaching), Prof. Tan TAN, Dr. Jing Wang, and Prof. Junjie Chen.

Notably, Ms. Amy Ho is a proud former undergraduate student from our department. We are immensely gratified to see our graduates contributing back to the industry and making a meaningful impact.
Their presentation, followed by discussions on research interests, graduate recruitment, and collaboration opportunities, fostered valuable connections. The visit to the iLab further showcased innovative projects and ideas shaping the future of real estate, construction and infrastructure.

๐Ÿ†Huge congratulations to our PhD graduate, Dr. Yijie Wu, on winning the prestigious Li Ka Shing Prize 2024/25!

Dr. Wu earned this top recognition for her thesis: "A Building Skeleton Theory for Automatic 3D Reconstruction of BIM and CIM."

Her thesis introduces a novel theory that simplifies complex 3D building scans into compact "skeletons." By capturing the essential shape and structure of a building, her method makes digital modeling for both individual buildings and entire cities significantly more manageable.

Her experiments demonstrate that this theory not only accurately and compactly reconstructs building surfaces and volumes, but also enables advanced analysis of building shapes and patterns for Building Information Modeling (BIM) and City Information Modeling (CIM).
