How did Ming-Dynasty China organize its military defense in 3D?

On 29 September, we had the pleasure of hosting Prof. Hongtao Liu from Southwest Minzu University for a fascinating heritage conservation seminar titled, “Military Defense System and Spatial Pattern of Songpan Guard in Ming-Dynasty China.”

Prof. Liu’s research sheds light on a distinctive defense model uniquely tailored to southwestern ethnic frontier regions. During the talk, we explored:

📍How the ancient military defense system evolved institutionally
📍The intricate structures of civil and military administration
📍How defense mechanisms were organized geospatially in 3D

A big thank you to Prof. Liu for sharing such incredible insights at the intersection of history, geography, and spatial planning with our department!
