Join us for an inspiring afternoon of life stories, human connection and innovation!

TszKin Chen梓鍵, a young person living with a rare disease, will share his journey, dreams and reflections on life together with volunteers and healthcare professionals. Discover how an AI virtual human created for TszKin can help preserve and share his voice, raise awareness of rare diseases, and inspire others through life education.
A “Human Library” creates opportunities for people to listen to and learn from lived experiences through meaningful conversations. TszKin’s AI virtual human has been developed to support him in telling his story, promoting rare-disease awareness and encouraging others.

This session is co-hosted by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Adolescent Medical Centre (AMC), Dr Eve Wong and our Department. Also, please note that RTHK TV 31 will be filming portions of the event for a special episode of Hong Kong Story (《香港故事》). Participants may be included in the recorded footage.

Abstract:

Lived experience leadership is increasingly promoted across health and social care, but what does it actually mean to lead through lived experience?

This seminar will examine contemporary approaches to lived experience leadership, exploring examples of what it looks like in the context of health policy, health services, health research, and health education. I will discuss power relations that can shape who gets to lead, and whose knowledge counts.

Drawing on research from our lab, I’ll consider some of the challenges of moving beyond tokenistic participation towards forms of leadership in which people with lived experience have genuine influence over research, policy and practice.

About the speaker:

Dr Brett Scholz is an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine and Psychology at the Australian National University. He does not work from a lived experience perspective himself, but his research focuses on lived experience leadership. Most of this work has examined what it would look like to have a lived experience led mental health sector - but his research programme has also explored how the principles of lived experience leadership might be applied in other domains (including palliative care, intensive care, marginalised and minoritised groups). His work examines how lived experience can be recognised as a form of expertise and how power can be redistributed within research and health systems. Brett is Vice Chair of the International Society of Critical Health Psychology, Deputy Editor of the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing and Associate Editor of Qualitative Health Research.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion on research, practices, and policy developments aimed at promoting equity in access to dementia interventions and care.

Abstract:
This seminar will present findings from DETERMIND, a prospective UK cohort study following 935 people newly diagnosed with dementia and 699 family carers across three diverse regions since 2019. It explores inequalities in the post-diagnostic care pathway, and presents new evidence on how the timing of a dementia diagnosis affects quality of life for people with dementia and their carers, with implications for global policy directives that advocate for an early diagnosis of dementia.

About the speaker:
Dr Ben Hicks is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham, UK. Over the past 15 years, his research has focused on social inclusion and quality of life in people with dementia. He is the Programme Manager for DETERMIND and leads its Workstream 6 on diagnostic disclosure. Prior to managing DETERMIND, was a Psychology Lecturer at Bournemouth University, where he completed his PhD on social inclusion among rural-dwelling older men with dementia in England.
