Most people walking through HKU's Main Building pass a bronze bust without a second thought.

Each year on 12 October, however, the University community and members of Hong Kong's Zoroastrian community gather to honour the man it commemorates: Sir Hormusjee N. Mody.

More than a century ago, his landmark donation helped turn the vision of Hong Kong's first university into reality. Today, Main Building stands not only as HKU's oldest building, but also as a reminder of how philanthropy and a belief in education can shape generations.

His legacy lives on in every student whose future has been transformed through education.

每天穿梭於本部大樓的人，也許未必知道，在大樓靜靜守望港大的一尊銅像，紀念的是港大早期的支持者之一 ，麼地爵士（Sir Hormusjee N. Mody）。

每年10月12日，港大與香港祆教社群都會舉行紀念儀式，向這位慈善家致敬。百多年前，他的慷慨捐助為香港第一所大學的誕生提供關鍵支持；百多年後，他所相信的教育力量，仍然影響著一代又一代人的人生。

有些傳承，不只存在於建築之中，更延續於每一個因教育而改變的未來。

HKU ranks 33rd globally and first in Hong Kong in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, reaffirming its position among the world's leading institutions.🎉

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has maintained its strong global standing in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, placing 33rd globally and reaffirming its position as the highest-ranked higher education institution in Hong Kong.

The University saw a rise in its academic reputation in the latest rankings, reflecting growing global recognition of its scholarly excellence and research contributions. The results underscore HKU’s sustained strength across teaching, pioneering research, and global engagement, highlighting its success in attracting world-class talent and fostering an impactful academic environment.

Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, remarked, “The true value of a university lies in its capacity to shape the future. At HKU, our focus is on pioneering new frontiers of knowledge and nurturing the visionary thinkers who will solve tomorrow’s global challenges. We will continue to advance our mission as a leading global institution, driving progress through world-class teaching and research innovation to strengthen our contributions to the betterment of Hong Kong, the nation, and the world.”

Story behind Chong Yuet Ming Buildings, and Amenities Centre 🏫

Situated at the northeastern edge of the Main Campus, the Chong Yuet Ming Buildings have long stood as an iconic symbol of our Faculty of Science and a vibrant hub for student activities. Comprising the Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building (莊月明物理樓), the Chong Yuet Ming Chemistry Building (莊月明化學樓), and the Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre (莊月明文化中心), these structures were officially opened on December 13, 1994, by Professor Wang Gungwu (王賡武), Vice-Chancellor, and Mr Li Ka-shing (李嘉誠).

Mr Li generously established a fund in loving memory of his late wife, Madam Chong Yuet Ming (莊月明), an HKU Arts graduate of 1961, after whom these buildings are named.

Dr Li Ka Shing

Since 1980, Dr Li has been a steadfast supporter of HKU through the Li Ka Shing Foundation. His contributions are woven into the very fabric of the campus — from the Chong Yuet Ming Buildings and Amenities Centre to the Cultural Centre and the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. Yet his impact extends far beyond physical infrastructure. In 2019, he introduced Hong Kong’s first colour x-ray scanner, the MARS Scanner, transforming diagnostic imaging. Most recently, Dr Li donated the Histotripsy System, an innovative cancer treatment device that opens new possibilities for liver cancer care.

Dr Li’s legacy at HKU is more than a series of donations — it’s a testament to his unwavering belief in human potential. Through his vision and compassion, he has empowered generations of students, researchers, and medical professionals, leaving an indelible mark on Hong Kong and beyond.

Story behind The Jockey Club Tower 🏢

In 2012, an exciting new chapter began with the opening of the Jockey Club Tower. Covering over 17,500 square meters, the Tower proudly became the new home for the Faculty of Social Sciences, bringing all affiliated departments together under one dynamic roof. It was made possible through generous donations of HK$323 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (the Trust).

Within the Tower, an inter-disciplinary programme “Excellence in Capacity Building for Entrepreneurship and Leadership for the Third Sector” (ExCEL3), took flight. Supported by the Trust and organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences, ExCEL3 seeks to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship, strengthen the leadership, management, governance and organisational capacity of the third sector; and build a platform that brings together philanthropists, foundations, and institutional investors with non-governmental organisations, as well as the academic community through training, sharing and research.

At the opening ceremony, Mr Brian Stevenson, the then Chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, remarked, “We are truly grateful for the naming of this building, as it will serve as a central facility for the Faculty of Social Sciences, which has been a longstanding partner of our Charities Trust in researching and implementing various community initiatives.”
