The University of Hong Kong (HKU) announced that the Board of The University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development and Research (HKU Foundation) has approved the appointment of Dr Patrick P**n Sun Cheong as its new Chairman, with effect from 1 September 2026. Dr P**n, previously Deputy Chairman of the HKU Foundation, succeeds Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, former Vice-Chancellor of HKU, as Chairman of the Board.

Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, said: "Dr P**n is a distinguished alumnus of our Faculty of Science and has served for many years as Deputy Chairman of the HKU Foundation. Throughout his career, he has established himself as an accomplished business leader, a committed advocate for education and a dedicated philanthropist. Building on the strong groundwork laid by his predecessors, I believe his strategic vision will propel the University's mission forward."

Professor Zhang added: "Professor Tsui provided invaluable leadership during his tenure as Chairman of the Foundation, expanding its impact and deepening support for the University's aspirations. On behalf of the HKU community, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for his outstanding contributions and steadfast commitment." Upon stepping down, Professor Tsui assumed the role of Honorary Lifetime Chairman of the HKU Foundation.

A steadfast supporter of his alma mater, Dr P**n has contributed significantly to HKU's academic development, governance and institutional advancement. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, HKU conferred on him an Honorary University Fellowship in 2011 and an Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences degree in 2025.

The HKU Foundation brings together the shared commitment and generosity of its supporters to advance the University’s long-term development. Under Dr P**n's leadership, HKU looks forward to working with the Foundation's members to advance the University's mission in education, research and service to society.

Story behind Run Run Shaw Tower 🏢

Opened in 2012, the 11-storey Run Run Shaw Tower (逸夫教學樓) and its companion, the Run Run Shaw Heritage House (逸夫苑) on the Centennial Campus, stand as enduring testaments to the University’s benefactor — Dr the Honourable Run Run Shaw. Alongside the Run Run Shaw Building (邵逸夫樓) and the Runme Shaw Building (邵仁枚樓) on the Main Campus, these landmarks serve as tangible representations of the philanthropic legacy left by Dr Shaw, a visionary luminary.

Prior to the completion of the Run Run Shaw Tower, teaching, learning, and research facilities of the Arts Faculty were scattered across various buildings on the Main Campus. The move to the Tower not only provided a new, centralised home but also fostered the integration of schools, centers, and affiliated units under one roof, symbolising the new sense of unity. Beyond its role as an academic hub, the Tower’s concourse also serves as a gallery, hosting regular exhibitions that showcase artworks and photography by our talented arts alumni, students, and staff.

This meaningful transformation was made possible through the generous support of the Shaw Foundation, a philanthropic engine fueled by Dr Shaw, a visionary luminary and the master of the arts. 🎭

Story behind Run Run Shaw Heritage House - Grade II Historic Building 🏫

Opened in 2012, the 11-storey Run Run Shaw Tower (逸夫教學樓) and its companion, the Run Run Shaw Heritage House (逸夫苑) on the Centennial Campus, stand as enduring testaments to the University’s benefactor — Dr the Honourable Run Run Shaw. Alongside the Run Run Shaw Building (邵逸夫樓) and the Runme Shaw Building (邵仁枚樓) on the Main Campus, these landmarks serve as tangible representations of the philanthropic legacy left by Dr Shaw, a visionary luminary.

Built in 1925, this historic building once offered a warm home to the site managers of the Elliot Pumping Station and Filters. Following changes in water supply arrangements, the site ceased operation in 1993. In 2012, it became part of the Centennial Campus and was named in honor of Dr Run Run Shaw, in recognition of his generous support to the University. Today, it serves as a gracious space for the Hong Kong University Press and the Society of Fellows in the Humanities of the Faculty of Arts.

Dr the Honourable Run Run Shaw

In a long and highly creative career in the cultural sector, particularly in film and television, Dr the Honourable Run Run Shaw, GBM, was truly a master of the arts. His shrewd and imaginative leadership helped to create a stage on which Hong Kong’s creative and cultural talent was on display, and from which emerged a modern Hong Kong identity. Arts and culture are the face a community sees in the mirror, and also the face it turns to the world outside. More than anyone else, Dr Shaw showed Hong Kong to itself and to the world.

While Dr Shaw’s monuments are all around us, the most precious are the invisible ones — the great educational projects he supported so generously. He was extraordinary generous to HKU, and indeed to many other universities in Hong Kong and beyond.

Story behind Philip KH Wong Theatre✨

On December 15, 2022, a deeply moving dedication ceremony was held to honor the late Dr Philip Wong (黃乾亨), an exemplary alumnus and lifelong benefactor whose modest wish was to be described as “an ordinary person who perhaps has done something extraordinary and beneficial for the community.”

Throughout his life, Dr Wong exemplified humility, kindness, and unwavering dedication. His generous support and heartfelt commitment to HKU have left an indelible mark on the University’s history. In recognition of the enduring support from the Philip K.H. Wong Foundation and the Wong family over the years, the Faculty of Law’s Centre for Chinese Law has been named the “Philip K.H. Wong Centre for Chinese Law (黃乾亨中國法研究中心),” and a 300-seat lecture theatre bears his name as the “Philip K.H. Wong Theatre (黃乾亨講堂).”

Dr Philip Wong Kin-Hang

Philip Wong is fondly remembered as one of the architects of HKU’s traditions. An exemplary alumnus and long-term benefactor, he supported various University’s initiatives for over three decades, leaving an indelible mark on its history.

He always held HKU close to his heart. Whether serving as President of the HKU Alumni Association, a member of the HKU Council, or a key figure in the 80th, 90th, and 100th anniversary celebrations, he brought his energy, wisdom, and unwavering love for the University to every effort—alongside his family.

Drawing on his professional expertise in setting up trusts and charities, Dr Wong was instrumental in establishing HKU Foundation in 1995 and served as Chairman in 2003 for a decade. An ardent believer in education, he endowed three Professorships and numerous scholarships at HKU. Revered as a distinguished member of the legal profession, he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1955 and an HonLLD in 1996 from HKU.

Story behind The Little Garden 🌺

“Thank God for a garden. Be it ever so small”

“The Little Garden” was a heartfelt gift to the University from the Wong family, officially opened on March 19, 2014. The name was lovingly proposed by Mrs Gertrude Wong (黃鄭國璋), wife of the late Dr Philip Wong (黃乾亨), in honour of their enduring connection to HKU.

Nestled at the western edge of the Centennial Campus, the Garden is thoughtfully planted with greenery chosen to create a serene space — a quiet haven for reflection, study, and calm. It stands as a gentle reminder of the generosity and vision of the Wong family, whose support has touched generations of HKU students and scholars.
