【HKU Dentistry Information Day 2026】Thank you for joining us at HKU Dentistry Information Day on 24 October! We were delighted to welcome students, parents and visitors to the Prince Philip Dental Hospital to learn more about our Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme, clinical training and learning environment.

Visitors joined admissions talks led by Professor Melissa Fok, Assistant Dean (Global Engagement and Development), toured our teaching clinics and simulation laboratory, and explored dental instruments, facilities and hands-on training. They also enjoyed demonstrations by student helpers, including simple dental procedures such as scaling and polishing on coins.
A special thanks to our BDS student speakers, Stephanie Sin, Tiffany Sin and Ryan Chak, for sharing their learning journeys, clinical experiences and campus life at HKU Dentistry.

We hope the day gave everyone a clearer picture of dentistry as a profession that combines science, clinical skills and compassionate care. Thank you again for visiting us. We look forward to welcoming future students to the HKU Dentistry family.

【ADM 2026 Conference】HKU Dentistry proudly celebrates the achievements of our team at the Academy of Dental Materials (ADM) 2026 Conference in Tokyo, Japan, a leading international meeting on dental materials science, AI, 3D printing, smart manufacturing and dental innovation.

Professor Chun Hung Chu, Chair Professor of Family Dentistry, received the prestigious Fellowship of the Academy of Dental Materials (FADM), recognising his significant contributions to the field. Professor James Tsoi, Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science, was invited as the opening speaker and delivered a presentation on “Smart Manufacturing in Dentistry”. He has also taken up the role of ADM Membership and Outreach Chair.

Our young researchers also received international recognition. Mr Daniel Cheung and Mr Arvin Liu, postgraduate students, received the ADM Student Travel Award and 3rd Prize in the Paffenbarger Award respectively, while Dr Wuyuan Zhao, a postdoctoral fellow, received the Marshall Postdoctoral Award. Congratulations to all awardees!

【牙科材料學學會年會2026】港大牙醫學院團隊於日本東京舉行的牙科材料學學會（ADM）2026 年會中榮獲多項殊榮。ADM 年會是牙科材料科學領域的重要國際學術會議，匯聚全球專家探討人工智能、3D 打印、智能製造及牙科創新等前沿發展。家庭牙醫學講座教授朱振雄教授獲頒授學會會士（Fellowship）榮銜，以表揚他在牙科材料科學領域的卓越貢獻。牙科物質學副教授徐傑漢教授獲邀擔任大會首位講者，以「牙科智能製造」為題發表演講，並出任 ADM 會員與外聯負責人。

學院年輕研究人員亦獲國際肯定，博士生張嘉龍先生和劉英衡先生分別獲 ADM Student Travel Award 及 Paffenbarger Award 三等獎，博士後研究員趙武元博士獲 Marshall Postdoctoral Award。

【DentAI Brushie App】

"Our mission is to make brushing more enjoyable and help children develop effective, independent oral hygiene habits." Driven by their concern for children’s oral health and commitment to giving back to the community, a student team comprising five Year 3 Bachelor of Dental Surgery students from the University of Hong Kong, Haileys Chan, Felicia Chong, Yenny Chong, Aston Ip, and Kelvin Nie, conceived to develop DentAI Brushie, a mobile application that uses artificial intelligence to provide real-time toothbrushing guidance.

With an ordinary toothbrush and a smartphone installed with DentAI Brushie, children can receive engaging and interactive toothbrushing training. According to a survey conducted by the team, around 85% of parents felt that their children’s toothbrushing effectiveness was not satisfactory. Through real-time guidance, gamified elements, and brushing reports, the team hopes to help children build better brushing habits.

The team’s vision and innovative efforts were recognised with funding support from the Global Hub for Future Dentistry (GHFD), enabling them to further develop the app concept into a practical product. Jointly developed by HKU Faculty of Dentistry, in collaboration with HKU Techno-Entrepreneurship Core (HKU TEC), and Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), the initiative is dedicated to driving dental innovation, entrepreneurship, research translation, and commercialisation.

Professor James Tsoi, Director of GHFD cm Assistant Dean (Innovation) at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry, shared, "The GHFD is committed to support promising dental innovation projects and to translate ideas into practical applications. We warmly invite aspiring students and teams to join us in shaping the future of dentistry."

「我們希望透過科技，讓刷牙變得更有趣，並幫助兒童建立有效而自主的口腔衛生習慣。」由陳姵彤、莊馥菱、莊颺菱、葉尚衡，以及聶均鑫，五位香港大學牙醫本科三年級學生組成的學生團隊，本著對兒童口腔健康的關顧和回饋社會的初衷，共同構思研發一款利用人工智能提供實時刷牙指導的手機應用程式 — DentAI Brushie。兒童只需使用普通牙刷及已下載DentAI Brushie的智能手機，便可得到趣味十足的互動式刷牙訓練。根據團隊調查顯示，約 85% 家長認為子女刷牙效果未如理想。為此，他們透過手機應用程式內的實時指導、遊戲化元素及刷牙報告，希望幫助兒童建立更獨立自主、更有效的刷牙習慣。

團隊的設計初心與創新的努力，最終獲得了牙創匯的資助肯定，可利用撥款進一步將這個應用程式的構思轉化成實際產品。牙創匯是香港及大灣區首個牙科創新培育計劃，由香港大學牙醫學院、香港大學創新創業中心及香港科技園公司共同策劃，致力推動牙科創新、創業、研究轉化及商業化。牙創匯總監兼港大牙醫學院助理院長（創新）徐傑漢教授表示：「牙創匯致力支援具潛力的牙科創新項目，將想法轉化為實際應用。我們誠邀有志的學生和團隊加入，攜手開創牙科未來。」

【Advance Shape-Adaptive Hydrogel for Complex Trauma Reconstruction】A research team from HKU Dentistry, in collaboration with Professor Su Ryon Shin’s group at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, has advanced and preclinically validated a novel shape-adaptive hydrogel, named iHEÄLS, for complex trauma reconstruction. The findings were published in Advanced Materials.

Led by Professor Sang Jin Lee, Assistant Professor in Biofunctional Materials from the Division of Applied Oral Sciences and Community Dental Care at HKU Dentistry, the HKU team further developed and validated the hydrogel’s potential clinical applications, particularly for complex craniomaxillofacial trauma involving severe bleeding, irregular bone defects and comminuted fractures. Inspired by the malleability of Play-Doh, iHEÄLS can be shaped to fit irregular anatomical defects while providing rapid haemostasis, strong tissue adhesion, self-healing capability and mechanical resilience. 【HKU Impact Award 2026】Congratulations to Professor Chun Hung Chu, our Chair Professor of Family Dentistry, on receiving the inaugural HKU Impact Award 2026! This new award recognises members of the HKU community who have successfully translated knowledge, research and innovative ideas into meaningful societal and economic impact. It highlights that the significance of innovation goes beyond technological breakthroughs, and can also improve public services, promote sustainable development, and enhance quality of life.

Professor Chu’s achievement highlights his outstanding contributions to advancing children’s oral health through research, clinical innovation, and community service. He pioneered the translation of Silver Diamine Fluoride research into a widely adopted, non-invasive approach to preventing childhood dental caries. Over the past two decades, his work has improved oral health outcomes for children and influenced public oral health policy in Hong Kong and beyond.

Led by Professor Chu, the HKU Faculty of Dentistry launched the Jockey Club Children Oral Health Programme in 2019 with the support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, by 2025, the programme had served nearly 180,000 children and delivered almost 390,000 non-invasive silver diamine fluoride treatments. The programme has contributed to a 9% drop in caries prevalence and a 27% reduction in the average number of decayed teeth among participating children, demonstrating how research can be translated into real-world impact. We are proud to see Professor Chu’s dedication and impactful work recognised at the University level. Congratulations again on this well-deserved honour.

【2026年度香港大學卓越影響力大獎】學院祝賀家庭牙醫學講座教授朱振雄教授榮獲首屆香港大學「卓越影響力大獎」！這個全新獎項旨在表揚將知識與創新意念轉化為實質經濟或社會影響的港大校友及教職員，彰顯創新意義不限於技術突破，也可改善公共服務、促進可持續發展及提升生活質素。朱教授的成就充分彰顯了他透過科研、臨床創新及社區服務，推動兒童口腔健康發展的卓越貢獻。他將其氟化氨銀的基礎科研轉化為全港性「非入侵性預防口腔健康模型」，20多年來走訪近千間幼稚園，改革香港幼兒公共牙科政策。

由朱教授帶領的「賽馬會幼童健齒計劃」，於2019年由香港大學牙醫學院在香港賽馬會慈善信託基金支持下推出，截至2025年，服務近180,000名兒童，並完成近390,000顆牙齒的非侵入性氟化二胺銀治療。參與兒童的蛀牙患病率下降9%，平均蛀牙數目減少27%，充分展現科研成果如何轉化為實質社會影響力。我們很高興朱教授多年來的努力與貢獻獲大學肯定。再次衷心祝賀朱教授獲此殊榮！

【Love Teeth Day】Love Teeth Day is a community dental outreach initiative first launched in 2024 by the HKU Faculty of Dentistry, The Society of Preventive Dentistry of Hong Kong, and Project Concern Hong Kong, in collaboration with local District Health Centres. Over the past three years, this ongoing program has brought essential oral health services directly into local neighborhoods across Hong Kong.

This year, Dr Olivia Zhang, our Clinical Practitioner in the Division of Restorative Dental Sciences led our dedicated team of dentists and students, to host two successful service sessions in September and October. Working alongside the Sha Tin District Health Centre and Kowloon City District Health Centre, the team provided oral check-ups, fluoride applications, and dental health instructions to a total of 135 community members. Beyond delivering care, the outreach offers valuable hands-on learning and community connection. Hailey Chan and Sandy Ru, two BDS students expressed that participating in the initiative gave them a meaningful teamwork experience outside campus while strengthening their sense of social belonging.

Meanwhile, Joanna Hui, a postgraduate student shared that helping plan the program enhanced her project management skills and offered a deeper, more practical understanding of local community needs. We sincerely thank all our partner organisations, team members, and participating residents for their continued support. We look forward to working together to promote community oral health and bring healthy smiles to even more people!

【愛牙潔齒日】「愛牙潔齒日」是由香港大學牙醫學院、香港預防齒科學會及香港醫藥援助會於 2024 年發起的社區牙科外展服務。項目一直以來與各區地區康健中心緊密合作，持續走進本港不同社區，為市民提供免費口腔保健與護理支援。

今年，修復牙科科學部臨床講師張麗麗醫生帶領牙科醫生及學生團隊，先後於 9 月及 10 月聯同沙田地區康健中心與九龍城地區康健中心舉辦了兩場地區服務。團隊為市民提供專業口腔檢查、氟化物塗抹及護齒指導，兩場活動共惠及 135 位社區街坊，進一步提升市民對口腔健康與預防護理的關注。活動不僅服務社區，也為學生提供了寶貴的實踐機會。兩名牙醫本科生陳姵彤及茹珮莎表示，這次活動是一個非常難得的團隊合作經驗，讓她們能夠走出校園服務社區，並增強對社會的歸屬感。

參與籌備活動的研究生許綽殷則分享，透過參與項目的策劃，不僅提升了其項目管理及協調能力，更能貼地了解社區的實際需要。衷心感謝所有合作夥伴、團隊成員及參與市民的支持！未來我們會繼續攜手推動社區口腔健康，讓更多市民重拾健康自信的笑容！
