【Column | Can People with Osteoporosis Receive Dental Implants?】Many elderly people mistakenly believe that osteoporosis means they cannot receive dental implants and must rely on removable dentures for the long term. However, removable dentures have limitations in stability and chewing ability, which may affect diet, nutrient intake, and overall quality of life in the long run. Professor Diana Wang, Clinical Associate Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, points out that most patients with mild to moderate osteoporosis can still safely receive dental implants, provided they undergo thorough assessment, appropriate surgical planning, and proper post-operative care, thereby restoring stable chewing function. The column was published on Ming Pao on 31 August 2026. Link: https://facdent.hku.hk/news/media/2026/202608/20260831.php

【Welcome to HKU Dentistry】1 Sep marks the beginning of a new academic year, and HKU Faculty of Dentistry warmly welcomed our incoming students at Orientation Day. Hosted by the Dean, Admissions Tutor, Associate Deans, and Assistant Deans, the Orientation introduced students to the Faculty, the learning journey ahead, and the six-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery curriculum. Students also gained a deeper understanding of the values, expectations, and professional responsibilities that will guide them throughout their dental education.

As they embark on this new chapter, our Faculty encouraged students to uphold compassion, professionalism, and a patient-centred approach in their future practice. Dentistry is not only about clinical skills and scientific knowledge, but also about caring for people and contributing to the advancement of oral health. We look forward to supporting our new students as they grow into future dental professionals who will serve the community with knowledge, integrity, and empathy. Welcome to the HKU Dentistry family!

【Column │ Bone-Protecting Drugs and Oral Health Risks: Understanding the Myths and Prevention of Jaw Osteonecrosis】Bisphosphonates are effective bone-protecting medications used to treat osteoporosis and bone metastases in cancer. However, in the early 2000s, some patients who had been taking or receiving injections of these drugs over a long period developed medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), leading many patients to stop their medication without medical advice. Professor Mike Leung, Clinical Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, explains that the risk of developing MRONJ from taking or receiving antiresorptive medications for osteoporosis prevention or treatment is extremely low, far lower than the potentially fatal risk of hip fracture caused by osteoporosis. By contrast, cancer patients receiving high-dose intravenous antiresorptive drugs face a higher risk. The column was published in Oriental Daily on 30 August 2026.
