Some of the toughest challenges in engineering cannot be solved with technical expertise alone.

As 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐠 (𝐇𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭-𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐁𝐀, 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓) advanced in her civil engineering career, she realised that the biggest obstacles were rarely technical. More often, they involved aligning stakeholders, navigating competing priorities and making decisions when there was no single “right answer”.

"The most difficult challenges in engineering projects were often not purely technical," Ashley reflected. "They were about managing stakeholders, aligning different team perspectives, meeting client expectations and making business decisions in uncertain circumstances."

The realization led her to the HKUST MBA. What she didn't anticipate was how much the journey would stretch her beyond her comfort zone. Accustomed to working behind the scenes, Ashley learned to speak up, share her perspectives, and lead with greater confidence.

With a background in logistics and supply chain, 𝐉𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐨 (𝐇𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭-𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐁𝐀 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓) recognized how quickly technology disruption, shifting demand, and ongoing restructuring were reshaping the field. Rather than waiting for change to force his next move, he decided to take ownership of his career growth.

That decision led him to the HKUST Part-Time Weekly MBA—and ultimately into a new role in Tech and AI Product Enablement.

Through the program, Jason built a stronger understanding of emerging technologies while gaining the perspective to apply his experience in new contexts. Working alongside a diverse cohort also helped him sharpen his thinking and approach challenges from different angles, giving him the confidence to step beyond his original field.

For Janice Li, it was reaching a plateau in the food and beverage industry and realizing she needed to learn how to speak the strategic language of the C-suite. For Christopher Liddard, it was watching senior leaders around him secure major investments and realizing he needed to upskill before it was too late—leaving him with a single, urgent question: "If not now, then when?"

We closed our season of in-person events in Admiralty, where Prof. Stephen Shih, Associate Dean of MBA Programs, sat down with three alumni and current students to talk about what actually changed for them.

Most people assume investing rewards the sharpest mind in the room.𝐋𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐠, 𝐂𝐄𝐎 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤, built her career on the opposite idea, that what lasts is something rarer, and far harder to learn.

In a world buried in news, alerts and live prediction markets, she keeps her Bloomberg terminal switched off for most of the day. Not because she's behind, but because she worked out that the edge isn't reacting faster than everyone else. It's the discipline not to react at all. Sometimes, she says, doing nothing is the discipline.

No lecture this time. Participants ran a live simulation and took the seat of decision-makers facing a real corporate dilemma: hit short-term targets or protect long-term strategy. There was no right answer, so teams had to negotiate, argue their case, and commit to a decision together.

The hardest part came when ethical integrity collided with what the incentives rewarded. That tension is what modern leadership actually looks like, and participants left having felt it, not just heard about it.
