This August, we welcomed the 𝐇𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐌𝐁𝐀 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 to Immersion Week, kicking off an exciting new chapter in their MBA journey and filling our Clear Water Bay campus with fresh energy, new perspectives, and endless possibilities.

This year's class represents 𝟐𝟎+ 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, including 𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚, 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞, 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚, 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲, 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚, and many more. With backgrounds spanning technology, finance, healthcare, consulting, entrepreneurship, and beyond, they arrive with different experiences and aspirations, but share a common ambition to grow, challenge themselves, and create meaningful impact.

Throughout the Immersion Week, students took part in a variety of activities designed to prepare them for the MBA journey ahead. They experienced 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 through the MBA Challenge, explored emerging trends in the session "AI for Business Leaders: From AI Fundamentals to Generative AI Opportunities and Risks," and participated in career workshops, networking sessions, and classroom activities that encouraged them 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐧𝐞.

When the world feels increasingly interconnected, gaining an international perspective doesn't always mean moving far from home.

Last Saturday afternoon, a full house of professionals gathered in Shanghai for 𝐇𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐌𝐁𝐀 𝐀𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐢 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 to explore how an MBA can broaden horizons, accelerate careers, and prepare leaders for a global business landscape.

The event opened with an introduction to the HKUST MBA by 𝐌𝐬. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐞,𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐀𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, followed by a dynamic panel featuring alumni from diverse industries, including luxury retail, healthcare technology, banking, and entrepreneurship:

The conversation explored why they chose Hong Kong and HKUST MBA, pivotal moments that transformed their careers, lessons gained from international exchanges, and how they are navigating AI-driven disruption and rapid industry change. The discussion continued well beyond the panel. Audience actively engaged with thoughtful questions on career development, industry transformation, global mobility, and balancing studies with professional ambitions.

One message resonated throughout the afternoon: leadership today is no longer defined by expertise alone, but by 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬, 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬.

"𝘼𝙄 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙖 𝙝𝙮𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨. 𝙄𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣'𝙩 𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙝 𝙝𝙮𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜."

That insight comes from 𝐘𝐮𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢 (𝐘𝐮𝐤𝐢) 𝐊𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐚, an HKUST MBA alumnus (𝘍𝘶𝘭𝘭-𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘔𝘉𝘈 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧 2018), reflecting on why strategic human judgment remains irreplaceable.

Early in his career as an IT consultant in Japan, Yuki’s work followed a familiar blueprint: take a proven fix and execute it well. Rarely did anyone stop to ask if it was the right fix to begin with.

His perspective shifted during a 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐓. Without a pre-set template, he had to define what "success" looked like before taking a single step. That, in essence, defines our current landscape: while AI rapidly automates routine, ex*****on-based roles, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲.

Today, Yuki leverages that exact mindset in Bangkok, helping Japanese enterprises expand across Southeast Asia. When asked why an increasing number of Japanese professionals are building careers beyond their borders, his answer is pragmatic: "𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩'𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨. 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩'𝙨 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙝."

Recently, HKUST MBA had the pleasure of bringing together HR and business leaders from across industries for a day of meaningful dialogue and collaboration through the HKUST MBA HR Seminar and the HKUST MBA 2025-26 2nd Corporate Advisory Board Meeting.

At the 𝐇𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐌𝐁𝐀 𝐇𝐑 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫, more than 90 HR leaders joined us for discussions on the evolving relationship between leadership and AI. The day began with opening remarks by Associate Dean Prof. Stephen Shih, and Head of CPD Anna Woo. A key highlight was a workshop led by Prof. David Hagmann, who translated academic research into practical leadership applications. He demonstrated how generative AI can serve as a cognitive partner, helping leaders refine their authentic voice and deliver more effective feedback. The session highlighted HKUST MBA's role in bridging academic thought leadership and business practice to develop capabilities increasingly valued by employers.

The day continued with the 𝐇𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐌𝐁𝐀 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓-𝟐𝟔 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, bringing together a distinguished group of senior HR leaders representing diverse industries. Their valuable market perspectives and ongoing partnership play an important role in shaping our career development initiatives, employer engagement efforts, and student development programs, helping ensure our offerings remain closely aligned with the realities of today's business landscape.

The greatest innovation in human history wasn't the wheel, agriculture, or even the artificial intelligence . It was our ability to work with people outside our immediate circle. People they had never met, who spoke differently, believed differently, wanted different things. That single trick built every city, every market, every institution that exists today.

When 𝐆𝐢𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢 𝐙𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢 (𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥-𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐌𝐁𝐀, 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟑) left Italy for Asia, he had no local network, no language advantage, and no clear roadmap for building a career in an unfamiliar market.

Today, he is the Founder and Managing Partner of Maestro Equity Partners in Vietnam.
